The diameter of an “average” ACW artillery wheel was 4 feet, 10 inches.  So what do you consider to be the average “height” of your artillerymen?
Probably around the 5ft 8in mark

 Hi guys

Reworked the guns and Limber wheels, reduced their diameter to 57in at 1/72, which is 20.1mm, and made them skinnier, they look much better with the Airfix crew now.

I’ve also taken some pics of the 1/72 3D prints of the Iron Brigade I’ve been working on, I’ve printed about 50-60 of these, they are just the ones I’ve quickly cleaned the supports off to take the pics, these have been made from the wargames atlantic digital set, it’s pretty limited, 4 standing bodies in frock coat, 3 types of head gear, and various arms, it could really do with a command set, a kneeling body and marching bodies, I managed to create some kneeling and casualty poses by combing with some other sets, and I have created some drummers and standard bearers, I need to work on some officers next.

The smaller guns and limbers look better. Getting 3d prints to the right size does seem to be slightly more of an art form than the maths it should be.

With the Iron Brigade figures, did you do the conversions in the STL files, or post printing? Either way great work.

I did everything in CAD, then printed as a single piece, printing parts and trying to get them together and look right is sometime tricky, it’s quicker and easier to do it on the PC.

Definitely the smaller pieces Dan!
If it isn't enjoyable, it isn't gaming!

Cool, good skills!

Thought on your WWII thread you had done some physical conversions of 3d printed vehicles (but I could be miss-remembering)

No, you are correct, I have been printing longer (a lot longer) than I have taught myself CAD skills, so those prints were as the STL came, but needed improvement, I do it all in CAD now, with much better results.

 Hi guys

WIP update of my 1/72 2nd Rhode Island infantry regt, they are about 60% done, I’m pretty happy with how they are turning out, I think I need another standard bearer.

 Hi guys

Mocking together some artillery teams, 3 deployed, 3 towed, I’m converting the airfix crews, except 1 of each pose for nostalgic reasons, I’ll put them all in the 1 gun crew, I also need to make the mounted and seated figures fit on their horses and limbers, a bit a carving will do the trick, horses, guns, limbers and most of the heads are 3D printed.

 Merry Christmas everyone

Between unwrapping gifts with the family, (I received a 3D scanner, which is going it introduce some very interesting possibilities) and cooking Christmas Dinner, I had a couple of hours to do some undercoating, so I can get some of my personal projects finished over my time off.

I’m concentrating on some Union artillery, limbers and ammunition wagons, I CAD designed an ACW ammo wagon for a well known 15mm ACW producer recently (I’ll let them make any announcements in their own time) and I used the files to print some wagons for my 1/72 ACW project, this is the first time I have painted these wagons so it’ll be interesting to see how they paint up.

The gun crew are all based on the Airfix set, I’ve left 1 crew of 4 figures unconverted for nostalgia reasons, the rest I have done various conversion on.

I have also taken pics of my growing Iron Brigade units.

Have a merry Christmas happy new year.

 Hi guys

Happy New Years, so I guess this is the time of year I start planning my hobby focus for the coming year, after many years of constantly jumping for one period and scale to another, never rely making any progress, 2 years ago I decided to dedicate all of 2023 to 1/72 WWII, and I stuck to it for 9-10 months, getting a lot completed, before getting distract by other periods/genres, I repeated that in 2024, with much the same results, I lasted about 10 months, so my discipline has been good, to a point, but I’m really enjoying the ACW stuff I’ve been doing this last month, and I’ve a hankering to get back into 1/72 Napoleonics, and to see what my 3D printer can do in that era, so, I’m thinking to expand my focus, but try and maintain the discipline, completing each batch before moving on, and doing a rotation between the 3, 1/72 WWII, ACW, and Napoleonics, which brings me to another thought.

I have been collecting wargaming/modelling stuff for a long time, I have most periods and genres in most scales, e.g WWII in 15mm, 1/72, 28mm, and 1/35, this is because, when I see a figure line I love I usually collect it, but I grew up on 1/72 plastic WWII and Napoleonics, and even though many of the other scales actually have better figures, I keep going back to 1/72, I can’t seem to get traction in any other scales despite owning whole ranges of figures, unfortunately this all takes up space, and I’m running out of space. It’s not in my nature to downsize my collection, so there’s much soul searching in my future, keep it? Store it? Or sell it off and make room for more 1/72?

Here is my progress on the 1/72 ACW Union artillery, still a bit of work to do, especially on the horses, but it’s getting there.

 Hi guys

For my first 2025 project, I managed to get the ACW Union guns finished, 2x 10pdr parrots, and a 12pdr Napoleon, I’ll finish the limbers/wagons and do another post tomorrow, guns are 3D printed, crew are converted/improved plastic Airfix figures.

Hi guys

1/72 Limbers and wagons finished, the 4 outriders and 4 limbers riders are Airfix, the limbers, wagons and other limbers riders and wagon drivers are 3D printed, also pictured with the finished guns.
