Looks great, cant say that I even begin to understand 40 mm but your arena is a gem!
LB

Look at the gladiators above in the pictures of took that are on page 2.

You can see those gladiators in the gladiator ring.  You can see how tall they are to the arena's walls or to the gates.

thanks!

Just how did you make the base?

Hello Wolf

I finally got the instructions from the guy (friend) who made my Gladiator Ring

Here are the instructions (I understand 99%of it) -

1" thick insulation, pick diameter, use tac, string, and sharpie to draw circle.
Use long serrated knife to rough cut foam circle.
Use insulation file to bring it closer to line.
Then use 60 grit sand paper and block to sand edge square and to the line.
Then take electrical tape to cover entire edge.
Decide hex size of board.
Center that hex over the hole that the tac made.
Use a fine point sharpie to trace the hex template.
Move template to new location off the center hex, repeat until board is covered.
Now make hexes out of card stock a 1/8 smaller.(5/8 wide hex make paper hex 1/2)
Make enough to cover the whole board.
Use craft glue and paint brush to glue down each hex in the center of the one traced on the board, so you can see the black lines.  Making the hex out of thick card stock is helpful, and out of a darker color then the flock your going to use will help out later.
After all the hex are glued on the board find something flat to put over it and put something heavy on it until the glue dries.
Then paint the lines between the hexes black make sure you don't leave and foam showing.
Do three coats.
Then mix the flock you want to use.
Decide on base color to paint something similar to the flock but darker.
Paint a few hexes NOT the black lines and sprinkle the flock over it.
Shake off excess flock and repeat on remaining hexes.
Let dry over night
Inspect to make sure that no areas of foam are showing.
Paint with either color to cover up any foam.
If you dont when you seal it the foam will melt and destroy the area that is not covered in paint.
Lightly seal, inspect for damage, if none seal again.

Hope you understand.  This is exactly what I received from him.

I think a 'tac' is a 'tack' - hold down the string in the center to draw a perfect circle with the Sharpie, Poiter.
Thanks for the construction tips. I'm going to put those to good use.

One miniature is too many, and a thousand are not enough...

Well, mine finally arrived and I discovered that I had bought an item that constitutes about 1/3 or 1/4 of the one that Big Mecha made up. Playmobil make 2 versions, 4270 is a full arena, 5837 is a portion which consists of the main gate, cages, podium and 2 wall sections together with the Playmobil figures and chariot. I will dispose of the figures and chariot but keep the rest.

Sorry to hear that Poiter!!!  Yes, I have the Playmobil 4270.  It has all the pieces.  I have looked on the sheet with all the pieces and it doesn't say
whether or not you can order more pieces.  I don't see why not though.

If you find out you can ...let me know.

By the way.... I bought a Playmobil 5837.  It isn't for me.  I want to give it to that friend to do for his Arena or give it out as a prize.

I didn't know Playmobil came out with another model!  I thought I was also buying another one like I bought before!  But I guess that is alright...
since I'm 'done' with mine except minor details.

Based on this thread I also recently bought the playmobil arena for 40 euros...  but my god, that thing is huge!!!

Which is actually a good thing, except for storage space. I have no cleu where I can store it. Maybe there still is some space next to the two unpainted castles on top of the unpainted lead cabinets..  lol
Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

I store mine in a 20 gallon tote.  Not together.  FYI  Maybe get yourself a 20 gallon tote.

I believe that is just a large plastic bin err...box with handles. In the states they are made by Tupperward and other companies.

Had to find out what that meant as well :D

I actually have half my corridor filled with those things... I mananaged to find a carton box though, that can also (barely) contain the Arena (disassambled). In a few years I'll remember where I stored it and will start painting ;D

Damn you, now there is pressure to paint the thing.

But it will still have towait untill we are going to play some gladiatorial games. It's just to big to use as a scenery piece, so would actually be a bit a waste of time to paint it right away.
