Airfix 1/72 figures got me into the hobby. At first I didn't paint them but eventually I got brave enough to try the Waterloo miniatures and the result was less horrible than I thought it would have been. My first proper 28mm figure was Lone Wolf based on the Fighting Fantasy books. And the rest, as they say, is history - and an increasingly large lead mountain in the spare room! :)

My Dad. Bought me my first box of 1/32 8th Army Soldiers one birthday, haven't looked back since. Played a lot of Rogue Trader and WHFB at school. Then left the hobby for a while (rediscovered after an enjoyable 20's).
I don't really have any favourite scale, or period. I buy whatever I fancy painting, so the mountain is growing, but my son has now picked up the brush so hopefully that pile of Romans will get finished eventually.

@Harry Faversham, those are incredible  :-*

As for me, my very first dip into miniatures was casting flat soldiers with my dad and uncle when I was little.

I also knew about Warhammer as a kid, reading White Dwarf at my friends house, but I never owned any minis. I rediscovered miniatures just the other year, with some friends trying to get me into Warmachine and Hordes. While I don't see the appeal of that particular game, I have been stalking the scene since.

Airfix from the dawn of time, painted by me and our kid back in the 70s. Lot of better figures have passed over the bridge since then but I could never bring myself to part with our first Airfix warriors. Recently we've got stuck into the 'one hour wargame' scenarios, dead basic and great fun... they suit Airfix from yesteryear perfectly.
