[KICKSTARTER] Maelstrom's Edge - Scifi game by Dakka Dakka

Quote
Maelstrom's Edge is a far future science fiction setting where a golden age of exploration and innovation has been ripped apart and humanity is on the very edge of annihilation. The Maelstrom, a gigantic apocalyptic explosion of dark energy, is rapidly expanding out from the heart of the galaxy, destroying everything it touches. As worlds and stars are obliterated from existence, those who have the means flee towards deep space, while those left behind fight for the chance to escape.

So apparently the folks at dakka dakka have been secretly working on this project for 3 years or so.  Everything is planned to be in hard plastic (like what GW uses)

There are 2 factions so far:

Looks pretty cool, though humans v humans is not as interesting as humans vs xenos.  It's already halfway funded in just a short while, so it will likely do pretty well.

I quite like both factions for this.

Just paint the skin of the fancy armoured chaps and you have your xenos  :)

Will there be more in the ranges? I had a quick scan over the kickstarter page but nothing jumped out.

cheers

Not overly thrilled by the sculpts.

The sculpts are a bit...odd in anatomy. Not a fan.

Man, you guys are rough!  :)

They have an "Oldhammer" vibe to me, and I kind of like them. But maybe that's just me?

I like the alien looking guys but the colonial marine types are way to blocky for my liking.

I was reading a bunch on this yesterdays.  Agreed and the mercs. Blocky and bland.  They were described as poorly equipped reservists who have real day jobs.  If you buy that, it makes for an odd choice for a lead off faction in the main game box.

The game mechanics look good though.

From the sculpt standpoint this looks like another random generic sci-fi mess.  I hope the rules are good and lead to good things.  But to gain my attention today you have to bring something genuinely cool/new/different.  Not another generic sci-fi minis game with underwhelming sculpts and "battle for bla-bla-bla" title.

Overall, meh.  :?

I really like their terrain sprue idea.   Greebles for whatever boxes or structures you want to use ( gift boxes, junction boxes, sorting bins, etc)

Unfortunately it's not clear that when it is unlocked if there will be a terrain-only pledge.

As for the rest of the game, I think they've done some impressive work.  The universe seems solid and they have already produced the polystyrene plastic sprues of fully pose-able, multipart figs which is quite a feat for a startup game.   Still,  I just don't have the time or desire for a new game system and I don't think the value at the "sweet spot" pledge is terribly impressive.  If they've already put down the capital for molds for plastic sprues, then the actual production costs for the figs will be fairly low.  They should capitalize on that fact and pack the box with minis. If they increased the number of figs, I think they'd have alot more pledges

As for me pledging, we'll see if an affordable terrain sprue offer comes up as the campaign goes along.

I like the heavy weapon guys in the high-tech faction but the other faction looks very stumpy. Drones are good. I really like the terrain idea though. A few sprues of that and you can make a small town.

I am not sold on then yet. I will see what else they come up with.

I think it is more a matter of how much can be done that is cool/new/different enough to generate enough sales without being something that consumers can't relate to as easily so they don't buy it?  I think that there are many figures that never sold well for the simple reason that they were new and different from what the majority of consumers wanted.  :?

I do like the fact they aren't just GW cloning with the minis. I guess the marine type guys could fit GW but not at first glance for me.
