Some men like fishing, others hurling. Some men like to see the cannon ball a rolling. My passion is the shiney love that dare not speak its name. Gentlemen, I give you Prussian Line infantry regiment No. 1 from the War of the Austrian Succession. This presentation is brought to you in glorious Gloss-o-Vision. The figures are from the ancient and venerable Spencer Smith range. The regiment is manned according to the "Charge!" old school rules. I painted an extra officer just because there is one in the Spencer Smith range.

Very nice indeed. The WAS figures are some of the nicest in the range.

The figures are very basic and contain lots of lead, which dulls detail. This sort of figure has become my most recent fetish. My interest is in taking a very basic figure and doing detailed and precise work on it. Doing conversions is almost a must with these figures as there isn't the breadth you get in modern ranges. People like the Perrys make it almost too easy. They produce sets that you could only make with conversions in the past (in the days of using jumpers for goalposts). I like the Perrys work. But I have developed an interest in these "old school" boys.

Digging around I found that there are several ranges that fit my new interest. I don't need to buy painted. These figures are painted but they show the sort of thing that now interests me. They look "home made" as contrasted with the professional look of Perry, Front Rank, etc.

I think I will probably want to produce some figures at some point. I am not sure what size to go for. I guess that, considering the simplicity I am aiming for, 20mm will be easiest.

This isn't an exclusive interest for me. I have an Elite miniatures 28mm Brunswick army on the go. They are just waiting for me to get my grass master back into operation so I can finish the basing.

BTW, here is a link to the Spencer Smith web site. Their figures are 55p (infantry) £1.55 mounted.

I've painted quite a few of the Spencer Smith Miniatures ("SSM") so I can see what an excellent job you've made of bringing out the detail - and hiding the various lumps and bumps which defy description. I'm a big fan of SSM and it's good to see them so well used.

Good luck with producing your own figures.

Thanks, Iain. I guess there will be a fair few lumps and bumps on the road to making my own figures. With this style I hope I've settled on something possible. I've done plenty of conversions of figures in the past.
