Helmets of the Seleucid Cataphracts
« on: 15 May 2015, 09:54:00 AM »
I'm considering doing a sculpt and am looking for images to guide me. My understanding is they used anthropomorphic faceplates not unlike later Khwarazmian and Qipchaq armor, but I think I've also seen them in elaborate Hellenic headgear. Any advice is welcome.

Mike

Have a look at Monvert Publications - Seleucid Army on Mr Google - some useful images on the web.   Similar face masks for some Companions as well.

Manufacturers like Relic, Gripping Beast (Polemarch), 1st Corps, Old Glory and Essex offer ideas in 28mm.   My Ancients 'bible' - Wargames Research Group Armies and Enemies of the Macedonian and Punic wars shows a Seleucid Cataphract with a metal bearded face and another with a similiar mask and helmet 'hair' in metal.

A useful web site is Jeff Jonas' -

Good luck

IIRC we have no clear evidence what Seleucid soldiers, let alone cataphracts, actually looked like. The only contemporary depictions of Seleucid equipment may be spoils of war shown on the Pergamon friezes – but even that's guess work, for we cannot be sure if the Pergamon monument was built to remember a triumph over the Seleucids (most likely that of Eumenes, as a Roman ally, at Magnesia).
However, it's a widely accepted view, so you may as well follow that route. Mithridates1 has provided a very good start.

Thanks Mithridates and Mad Doc, I'll be looking into those shortly.
