4th Queen's Own Dragoons - Talavera
« on: 20 May 2015, 08:47:21 AM »
Hi all,
The first unit of British "Heavies" are done with the completion of the 4th Dragoons

The "Queen's Own" would play a major part in Wellington's Peninsular War and become a veteran British cavalry regiment. Its Colonel would go on to command the Household Cavalry Brigade at Waterloo.

As usual, an excellent job.

Will be the 5th Dragoon Guards for me soon.  Simply as my Great Uncle x2 served with them in the 1880's.

Hi gustav,
Thank you.

Ah yes the 5th Dragoon Guards leading Le Marchant's brigade in their famous charge at Salamanca destroying eight French battalions in half an hour, causing the Duke to exclaim to General Cotton;

"By God, Cotton, I never saw anything more beautiful in my life! The day is yours."

I will of course want to add the 5th DG to the collection but I have another two years of scenarios to mess about with before they turn up in 1812, so bear with me.

Cheers
JJ

Hi Mason. Thank you.
These chaps only landed a couple of months before the Talavera campaign so I reckoned their tunics would have been still been quite scarlet. As I add to the collection of British Heavies I will add in a few more faded orange red types to represent the effects of the Spanish sun.

Excellent painting, basing and photography  :-* I don't know what it is but cavalry in large bicornes just look great and these are lovely.

Thanks chaps, really appreciate your comments.

Jeff965 Absolutely agree re bicorne cavalry. The great thing about the Peninsular War is that I get to model all types and plenty of variation with the numerous nationalities involved.

Cheers
JJ
