The Lion on Crusade
« on: June 08, 2015, 02:10:07 PM »
Recently I've picked up the brushes again for a bit of practice. Painting is still not and won't become a habit soon, but it's nice to get in touch with the 'real hobby'.
Still low-level I decided to create a Rampant-SAGA-whatever-skirmish-type warband. Yes, I'm only pretending to build forces for a specific game – shock, horror! Yet in terms of the all-favourite SAGA the following warband amounts to four points, comprising three units of "heartguard" (knights on foot) and one unit of "warriors" (retainers) as well as a "warlord" (perhaps only disguised as Ol' Dick Cśur de Lion).

My initial purchase (dating back to 2012-something) was actually meant for a game on the background of the Medieval German "Nibelungenlied". Therefore I took inspiration from Fritz Lang's movie and modelled a version of Hagen von Tronje with his distinctive winged helmet. A small number of similarly converted models has been repurposed for this crusading warband.

King Richard was sculpted by Michael Perry and sold at this year's Hamburg Tactica. At some point in the future I may replace him by another, less prominent leader (no, not John).

All other models are by Black Tree Design. Despite all the bad press they seem to receive I have experienced nothing less than excellent service from them each and every time I ordered. The models are very good as well, nicely detailed and cleanly cast. With all the negative comments floating around a wholehearted recommendation is in order here.

Full story, no more pics on the blog, if you're so inclined. ;)

Really impressive! Lots of spirit (for want of a better word) in those figures. I especially like the one with the blue-and-white striped livery (if livery is the right term for that garment) and the one next to it with the sublime reddish-brownish-purple and the animal emblem. The winged helmet is a eyecatcher, too.

That is really nice paint work!  I love the Black Tree figures and have a large number of them.  I too have had good luck with their service.

Excellent approach to the subject and even more cleverly pushed forward to be pressed into service for Saga! Your painting style is very beautiful and exactly the way I like it! Great heraldry too on the shields and garments.
