Ashigaru sniper
« on: 17 June 2015, 12:03:40 PM »
Here is a sneak peak of one of my latest sculpts, a ashigaru sniper, he is going to be part of a pack of lying teppo, which I'm working on.

Thats pretty cool. I like that its very different to anything else I have seen.

It would be cool to model him resting the gun on something if I get a copy, anything you reccomend?

Thanks, why not use a twig from the garden as a tree stump?

hm, I somehow cannot bring "sniper" and "anciant Japan" together in my mind.

But if, that would be it, though. Nice scuplting

Would calling it a sharp shooter help?

Its claimed by some that Takeda Shingen was killed by a sniper but there is little proof to verify said claim.

good question. Is it the word or the idea?
Come to think of it, I can imagine an ashigaru with a teppo, covering behind bushes, waiting for the enemy daimyo to get out. But then ... with a gun that might take 3 seconds or more from spark to shot ... I can't.
Would it help to be a ninja? Not sure, either.
SharpShooter sure is better, maybe hunter. Maybe there is a Japanese word for it. We use ashigaru, why not sogeki? But that is just from an online dictionary, and I don't know the feelings it may evoke or carry.

Still, the mini is cool, just brainstorming, sorry.

I know no Japanese so could not help there.

We don't hear much about it but Samurai armies did deploy skirmishers and marksmen - the period "by the book" battle formations show deployed skirmishers. I have read that marksmen were deployed to cause confusion in enemy formations by taking out enemy unit leaders - these marksmen could be samurai or ashigaru with arquebus or bow. The "classic" sengoku marksman though would probably be a samurai with bow so I sure hope that Steelfist have such a figure in the works to complement this ashigaru!

Thanks for all the interesting comments here!
Apparently Ii Naomasa was seriously wounded by a shimazu marksman at Sekighara.

I guess my thinking is this is a flexible pose, marksman/sniper, skirmisher, and according to one of my books this was one of the three shooting positions teppo were trained to adopt depending on the situation. The other two being standing and kneeling.
So for firing line teppo I will be make one pack standing one kneeling and one lying, three packs in total. Due in the next release along with three new packs of mounted samurai.

Then the release after will be two packs of archers! And new static samurai to replace Sam 6.

Releases will continue to include musicans ammo bearers more ashigaru in charging poses and fighting samurai, plus of course new daimyo. I also want to do some teppo with heavy caliber guns.
Cheers!
