Ruined piece for colonial/pulp/lost world
« on: October 20, 2008, 09:26:39 AM »
Hi

I've had this Conflix ruin lying around for a few years and I finally decided to do something with it. I was originally going to use it as my baggage for my DBM Ottoman Turk army as it looked vaguely middle eastern, but then I brought some other baggage pieces instead.

Here is the original piece by Conflix which is titled "EM6825 28mm Newly Destroyed Construction".

Next I mounted it on cardboard and added some extra rocks around the edges. I also gave it a few thin black and brown washes, which help show the details quite well.

Then I decided to rebase it on a piece of 3mm MDF. After I rebased it, I textured the base and painted it. Then I drybrushed the structure and rocks with a light creamy brown colour.

This picture shows the tree I made from a tree root (ala Grimms trees)wich I adde to help it look older and more decayed.

Here's a close up of the base of the tree before I painted it. The roots were made from tissue paper which I wet with PVA and then rolled up. I used some of my basing material (bathroom sealant) to smooth the roots onto the tree trunk.

Next I added a whole lot of different flocks onto the base using some of it to hide any imperfections.

A view from the side after it has been flocked showing the tree roots growing through the ruin. You can also see the cork pieces I used as large rocks inside the ruin.

The finished ruin from the front (with a couple of copplestone hunters to show you the size). I had given it some more thin washes of different colours (mainly red and green) to make it look older.

The back of it finished. I painted the tree and its a roots so they blended in together and I added a couple of twigs to look like broken branches. You can also see the green washes in this picture.

Overall I'm very happy with it and I will post some colonial games photos later with some more pictures of it.

Cheers
Kieran

Wow, outstanding piece of terrain.  :-*
Really love your efforts on the base, looks quite convincing. And a very versatile piece it is. Might even work as a centerpiece for a Dark Age table. Thanks for the hint and construction details!

Great idea, it really changes the look and improves the model. Thanks for the work in progress pics too. :)

That looks really good.  8) And not too difficult to do.

I've been toying with the idea of picking up a couple of the Conflix pieces as they have them in a local toyshop. You may have just decided me.  :)

That looks grand, I guess my questions is rather a silly one, but where do folks find tree roots suitable for terrain use?  I have seen several bits of outstanding terrain which make use of them, but I have yet to figure out how and where to get any that do not involve digging up my yard.

Someone did mention to me that sagebrush bushes work very, very well, but I just can't see myself sneaking into someone's yard in the middle of the night and digging up their shrubbery to make trees.

Excellent work. That building could work in so many different environments.

Wow, what a transformation... Well done you.

I am now regarding my Conflix half-timbered buildings with a slightly jaundiced eye, thinking 'hmmm... these really could be pepped up with a bit of time and effort... '

Thanks for the comments. It looks a bit washed out in the photos and I was thinking of adding some leaves to the tree and maybe some creepers/vines over the building.

UncleRhino
I got the tree root from a pine tree that fell over on my parents section. Just wait for a storm and get a pair of gardening snips or a saw! Also have a look at any old dead plants from a pot plant as the roots can useful.

Argonor
If you google Conflix EM6825 you should find it and some of their other pieces. I dont know if they still make them but I found some for sale when I was trying to find the right name for this.

Captain Blood
I have some as well but they dont really suit my armies so I haven't done anything with them.  But I think they will come up well with some more detailing and a paint touch up as most of the work is already done IMHO.

Cheers
