Some Stormin' Normans - SAGA
« on: 21 June 2015, 10:09:10 AM »
I've been on a bit of a Conquest/11th Century tangent since finishing my studies till October, and I've finally convinced my friend to play SAGA before we all go Bolt Action mad this summer, meaning that the two boxes of Conquest Norman Knights and Infantry I bought at Salute this year weren't purchased in vain!

They're lovely figures, even if the horses are a pain in the backside to put together thanks to their separate heads, but they paint up really well - I wish I could have spent longer on them, but we're playing this week and I still have the infantry and my warlord to paint yet! It's been a while since I've done much freehand - I had thought about using transfers for the shields, but they looked a little too clean for my tastes, so with a shaky hand I tried some designs. It's also the first time since painting Riders of Rohan for Lord of the Rings that I've dared to try painting horses a colour other than mid-brown!

They're nothing fancy, and a little rough around the edges, but they'll look cracking from a distance when they're harrying the enemy (my friend, who has an obsession with Dwarves, will probably be fielding some very short Vikings!) I might try and squeeze my Anglo-Danes in next. :)

I too have these figures, like you I love them. They are useful for several periods , Early Crusade , the Reconquista in Spain, I also use them as second line Sgts in later medieval periods. They also do Infantry figures . I prefer the hand painted shields for that " rougher look " and always remember Shield Transfers are for Wimps.

I really like the painting style, they look kind of cell-shaded, if that makes any sense  :)

And also +1 on the shields, just say no to transfers! These designs looks like believable historic patterns, and the rough finish just gives them a hand-made finish that fits the period well IMO.

Great job!

they look splendid, I also have a box of these figures so it is great to see them made up and painted. Mine have to mature in the cupboard a few more months yet while I finish my current project......

I know, how insane.... a wargamer committing to finishing one project before starting the next  :o

Very nice indeed, their archers should be available soon.

Sweet work on the normans! I love the freehand, it makes them look more genuine.

Apologies for the bump chaps, but I didn't really want to create a new thread for what is essentially the same thing.

Finally, after weeks of avoiding them and eventually tiring of painting Italians, I managed to paint my Norman Infantry, again from Conquest Games.

I must admit to being a little underwhelmed by these at first. They looked a little plain straight out of the box, with all that blank cloth, but I'm pleased with the final result. The shields, as usual, were the biggest sticking point - trying to find different designs for all of them was a bit of a chore!

Just the Warlord(s) and some crossbowmen and I can start on the Anglo-Danes... although I've been having daydreams about Vikings, too!

I've got Dark Age fever, it seems.  ;D
