Two Games of Age of Sigmar
« on: July 10, 2015, 11:31:05 PM »
I bit the bullet and played a couple of games of Age of Sigmar.
And enjoyed it more than I expected (or possibly hoped).

Interesting thoughts there, its influenced me to maybe actually try it out.  It is free after all.

Im not tied to modern warhammer in any way, fluff or its intention.  What I mean is, the mass combat portion of it.  It all leaves me cold watching folks play in the stores or conventions.
With that said  you write  "it's a bit like Lion Rampant - it's not a full skirmish game, but nor is it a traditional ranked up unit wargame - it's somewhere between "

That seems to be what Im looking for, SOBH/Mordheim is too small action.  Warhammer 4th onwards seems too large scale and coldly clinical.  This "inbetween" is what Ive always wanted, thought I caught a glimpse of it in LOTR SBG, but definitely like in Lion Rampant.

So if this Age of Sigmar thing is anything like Lion Rampant, I will give it a go!

Thanks for the read,
Mar

The whole large skirmish is why I want to try it. There really aren't many fantasy games like that.

Seems like games workshop might actually have tried to target a specific desire for this inbetween stage .

(at the rate i'm commenting on AoS threads people will think i'm some sort of GW shill! )

Ha ha I've been doing the same thing. It's probably the first thing GW has done in the last 15-20 years other then lotr sbg that I'm actually interested in.

Thanks for the feedback chaps.
TBH, if you like Lion Rampant but want a fantasy version, then I'd probably wait six months or so until Dan Mersey's Dragon Rampant gets released. :)

But hey, it's free and it's different. so I think one should give it a try before dismissing AoS entirely.

GW"s site says that the "full" Sigmarite Eternal Thunder Liberator guys will be 5 in a box for $50 USD.

Ouch.

I think I might just stop at the starter box as far as AoS goes, and then occasionally loot the rest of the old world lines for small bands of "D&D compatible things (dwarfs, wood elves, beast men/demons etc.) and maybe the Dark Elf black dragon or the undead giant bat with a ghoul on his back.

I got the big silly Goblin spider thing and that was a sweet model.

I think you have a carry over from WHFB on the battleshock test.  Reading the rules indicates 1 dice rolled yet you managed to score 11.  Pretty good on a dice 6!

Keep an eye out for "Drakerys" which is due for release in the next few months. Aimed directly at the large skirmish fantasy game. Interesting rule mechanics and wonderful figures (very much Rackham influenced in style)

I have special Spinal Tap dice - they go all the way to eleven!
:)

Thanks for the spot, I think you may be right...

Never mind, all part of learning the game.

I'm thinking Rackham's Rag'narok game (the original... not the one for the prepainted rubber minis) was something of a 'Large Skirmish' game... but I've yet to meet anyone who actually played it.
