Chain of Command Lists for Crete?
« on: July 12, 2015, 09:57:09 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a Chain of command list for The Brits and German forces?

Any help in this regard would be very much appreciated.

Darrell.

Hi
the British list will be New Zealand or Australian (and The Greeks Regiment on Crete)
Greece New Zealand in BEF uniform still and Australians in Australian Uniform and Long Trousers. for Crete the same uniform for troop transferred from Greece and  other reforcements from Egypt ?
so the 1940 or British 1940-41 Desert List would do since they transferred from there.

The Germans is a bit harder, since they were Fallschirmjager, Gebirgsjager
But the German DAK 1941 Army List or German 1940 Army List with minor changes might do ?
I just picked up Australian Army Campaigns series 13 and Images of war , War in the Balkans ;)
plus I had most of the Book in English on the Greece and Crete campaign.

Thanks David, I've already downloaded the list you've proposed I use but the uniform info is certainly of use  8)

So that's the Brits sorted.....

What about a list for the the Fallschirmjager?

If they do a 1940 list for FJ, use that.

Only major difference would be above platoon level. Though some at Crete jumped with MP40s.

It's hard to find any definitive structure for the early Fallschirmjagers, but I have had a go with Rich's "CoCulator" and come up with the following list.  Hopefully it is of some use, but it is a bit of guess work based on the info I have here and could find online.

Fallschirmjager 1940-1
Elite +10     6 Command Dice
Platoon HQ
Leutnant Senior Leader with SMG
Oberfeldwebel Senior Leader with SMG
Feldwebel Senior Leader with SMG
Two Soldiers with Rifles(Runners)
Mortar Team
5cm leGwR with 3 crew

Squads 1 to 3
Junior Leader with SMG
MG Team One
MG34 with 3 crew
One Soldier with Rifle
MG Team Two
MG34 with 3 crew
One Soldier with Rifle
One Soldier with SMG

Support
List One
Satchel Charge
Medical Orderly
Engineer Team(3 men)
List Two
5cm leGrW 36 mortar with 3 crew
Pzb38/39 Team(2 men)
List Three
Sniper Team
Flamethrower Team(3 men)
Pak 36 3.7cm anti-tank gun with 5 crew
and Junior Leader
List Four
FO and 8cm mortar battery
Tripod MG34 with 5 crew
LG40 7.5cm recoilless rifle with 5 crew
and Junior Leader (41 only)
Flak 2cm AA gun with 5 crew and Junior
Leader
List Seven
LG40 10.5cm recoilless rifle with 5 crew
and Junior Leader (41 only)

Usual German National Characteristics apply
Unique Weapon Stats

Looks interesting.
I am not sure that the game can justify 3 SL even if they had them in RL - no other list gets more than 2 and a lot of German lists have only one.
Also I would be interested to see the evidence for 2 LMG in early squads my reading shows they carried only one MG until later?

EDIT Interesting info here

Yes, I would be amazed to see two LMGs in a 1941 FJ section. Just do them as a normal rifle section.

GJ at platoon level were essentially just normal German infantry, they just have slightly different (and lighter) divisional support assets like mountain guns, and were organised like the Jager divisions with two regiments of three battalions each. They do get to wear their jazzy Bergemutze caps though.

This is making me dizzy  lol

Is the list above valid or do I substitute equipment with the next couple of suggestions on the two proceeding posts?

It is your game, do what you like.

However, I would suggest using the list above, but drop one or two senior leaders (depending how elite you think they actually were), and drop the second MG team in each section and replace them with blokes armed with rifles.

Given that the chaps have just parachuted (or glidered?) to earth I would guess that their actual organisation is a wee bit irrelevant or simply variable? I believe that FJ squads were 12 man strong to allow for inevitable losses during the drop?

You could do a lot worse than finding the two 'Skirmish Campaigns' books on Crete - they have TO&Es for both parachuted and gliderborne FJs.

Up until about a few weeks ago, reading the many posts on the TFL Blog, there was mention of the "Summer 2014 Special".  Apparently TFL puts out a biannual special publications (pdf) with all kind of goodies to support the various game systems they have.  With Chain of Command being the hot topic of late, the summer special has three campaigns and other goodies.  One of the campaigns is a fictious FJ jump onto mainland England to capture a secret oil field.  The year depicted is 1941 with the following FJ organization:

PLATOON HEADQUATERS
-Leutnant, Senior Leader, with MP40
-Medic
Rifle Team
-Two men with MP40 SMG
-Two men with rifles

SQUADS ONE TO THREE
Hauptgefreiter, Junior Leader, with MP40
LMG Team
-MG34 (Three crew)
Rifle Team
-Four Riflemen
RifleTeam
- Four Riflemen

Hope this helps.

Hi Darrell,

I did a Crete specific list for Fallschirmjager for Chain of Command.

Send me a PM and I'll flick it onto you...as i can't put it on the forum...and I did pass to Rich for an 'official' list so it might be on his HD. It's my version of the FJ Crete list, so change it if you feel so inclined....works for me.

Cheers

Happy W
