A question of rules - 40mm skirmish
« on: 21 July 2015, 09:35:51 AM »
Hello all,
I have been eyeing the Perry 40mm's for quite some time now, and have halfway decided to take the plunge and just dive in. The figures look splendid, the period is interesting and the Osprey warrior book on the reivers gives me a good basis for further studies of the small battles between the border families.

However, 40mm minis don't lend themselves easily to large battles, and my wallet is not really ready to supply my gaming table with enough models for more than maybe 5-6 models per side.

Therefore, I would like to enquire whether any of you have gamed with the perry minis, or if anyone can point me in the direction of a game that would suit both scale and budget. All suggestions and comments are welcome!

You could easily adapt the Warahhmwr Historical Legends of the Seas or Warhammer Lord of the Rings skirmish rules. (essentially the same same core rules).

They are a fairly basic but very playable set of rules that can be adapted to most periods. The Border Reviers would not need much altering of the core rules.

Hot Trod is still free & I seem to remember fairly adaptable.

En Garde! would be similar to Ronin where I usually play with 6-7 models per side.
Moreover, it's wonderful game :)

I've got the Hot Trod campaign, and it looks very well done. I think, however, that Ronin might be the way to go. Are there rules for black powder weapons in the Ronin rules? What about mounted? Could it be converted to the scottish-anglo border with any small effort?

Yes, there are rules for muskets and mounted models (there is also option for attacking from horse without stoping into actual combat - I'm not englishspeaker so forgot the nae of it). It won't be hard to convert the rules into european border clashes.
However, soon En Garde! will be publshed which - as I understand - is very similar to Ronin, but with tuned mechanic after almost 2 years of players experience with Ronin.

Ganesha Games have their Flashing Steel rules, a derivation of Songs of Blades & Heroes.  Quite fun to play.

I agree with giving the Ganesha Games engine a try. For my Song of Drums and Tomahawks rules in their line, each player needs no more than 12 figs -- usually less. For class convention games, I've brought that down to seven figs each and it works very well.

Plus the rules are so cheap to download as a PDF and give a look...
