15mm V 10mm are we seeing the death of 15mm ?
« on: August 01, 2015, 09:32:11 AM »
Can I see the death of 15mm gaming NOT for us old gamers we have toooo many old minifig armies to play with! :D

But for the New Blood of are Hobby i  see the ++ of gaming with 10mm and not staying with the traditional  15mm for large battles . I can see my two lads in a couple of years picking up a brush  next to there old man and zapping through a unit of 10mm in a single night ...and base the buggers up.. :) I have even jumped onto the 10mm Napoleonic bus and painted up two armies  for Age of eagles .

In the last few years i have seen less and less 15mm traders at shows and more 10mm traders appearing is the tide turning ..

I can't help to think that my next new project COULD  be in 10mm ? ACW ???

It will be interesting to see at my local club what happens over the next 10 years

happy gaming LR ..

How do you define the "death" of 15mm?

The 15mm manufacturers still vastly outnumber the 10mm manufacturers, I think.

By the time 10mm figures take the world by storm, they will actually be 15mm figures. Just as many 15mm figure ranges are now 18mm. The 10mm ranges out there are already divided between 10mm and 12mm as it is.

 ;)

Joking apart, what gives the impression that 10mm is taking over? Or indeed that 15mm will suffer any more than 6mm from a drift of players to 10mm?

 :)

Well, West Wind took over 53 grand for 15mm figures in this Kickstarter; https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/832150598/war-and-empire-the-miniatures-game-of-ancient-warf/description
so I don't think 15mm is going anywhere just yet.

In fact, between the huge ranges of 6mm and 15mm out there, maybe it's 10mm that's in danger?  :D

In all seriousness, I can't see any scale disappearing really.

I got into 10mm with Warmaster and had ideas about sculpting proxies ever since GW nobbled it. I like it a lot. In it's defence you can can get away with even more basic paintjobs and cram even bigger armies onto the table, at that scale. But going by the results of this slightly unscientific sample, I'd say this...

In fact, between the huge ranges of 6mm and 15mm out there, maybe it's 10mm that's in danger?  :D

... might be the more realistic scenario. And even that's saying too much. Don't sweat it!

Fear not with fantastic 15mm figures coming out of Legio Heroica, Westwind, Khurausan, Lurkio, Buaeda, Xyston will keep 15's going strong plus Peter Pig, Essex,  Old Glory etc. are also selling well and then take a look at PSC and Battlefront new plastics which are very nice which I believe will eventually spill over into ancients/medieval manufacturers further increasing the strength of 15mm. I think you need not worry. ;)

15mm is the new 28mm!  ;)

When I starting playing games marketed for the 28mm audience with 15mm figures, I thought I was the only one. I've since realized that many people do that, but most glossy rules (and some magazines) only have images of 28mm figures, even if 15mm could be used (like the Lion Rampant rulebook).

Well 12-15mm is pretty much 'true scale' for Chain of Command, something like 6mm is true scale for Bolt Action, possibly 3mm the same for FoW, so why wouldn't they work for smaller figure scales than intended and with no change to the ground scale?

The predominance of 28mm in magazines is largely due to their photogenic qualities, rather than their practicality as gaming pieces. You can't expand a picture in a magazine like you can online, so any detail on smaller figures is lost in the typical magazine-sized picture.

Spreading a 15mm platoon over a 6'x4' table in CoC does tend to give you true perspective of how big and lonely a modern battlefield really is at least.

Interesting. I used to think 10mm would be the scale I'd eventually end up mostly using - usual reasons, cost, number of figures on the table, space etc etc.

Then I tried painting a few Pendraken 10mm SCW and discovered, they're small... considering I used to do 6mm this was still something of a surprise to me!

15mm I think is probably safe enough. There are always going to be periods in one scale not available in another, I still think about picking up Pendraken for C19th because of the extent of the range, but as others have said there are plenty of very good ranges and manufacturers about in 15mm - it's probably becoming/(still) a happy medium.

I wish 15mm well and have fond memories of them, but 10mm is the One True Scale for me.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.
