In case you've not already seen this on one or other of our blogs...

The Pikeman´s Lament is our forthcoming adaptation of the Origins Award-nominated Lion Rampant skirmish rules. Where Lion Rampant focuses on bringing medieval combat to life on the tabletop, The Pikeman´s Lament helps you to refight battles in the Seventeenth Century (broadly 1611-1721, spanning conflicts such as the British Civil Wars, the Thirty Years War, and the Great Northern War).

Written as a collaboration between British Lion Rampant designer Daniel Mersey and Swedish Lion Rampant demonstrator and Pike and Shot gamer Michael Leck, we combine the simplicity of the original medieval rules with the feel of pike and shot warfare.

The core rules remain similar to Lion Rampant, but new troops types and additional special rules provide period flavour. We include plenty of new scenarios and a personality-led campaign system suitable for the period, along with sample army lists to help you get started.

Michael´s involvement means that these rules are so much more than the 'British Civil War with some European afterthought': he approaches the period from a Scandinavian perspective, incorporating visions of the Scanian Wars, Great Northern War, and Thirty Years War. There's also scope for adventuring in the Americas, Africa, and other exotic places. Michael originally approached Daniel with the idea of adapting the rules non-commercially, but with Osprey's enthusiastic backing, The Pikeman´s Lament will be published in book format as part of the Osprey Wargames Series in January 2017.

The Pikeman´s Lament is a stand alone set of rules retaining the simplicity, feel, and ease of play of Lion Rampant. Follow our playtest progress and further news updates at our blogs:

Sounds interesting.  I have not actually read or played Lion Rampant, but it seems to earn a lot of respect around here, and I am planning on picking up Dragon Rampant when it becomes available later this year.  Is there an estimated release date?

Edit: OOps, sorry I missed the date in the original post.

We just need someone to produce a set of models for the Ottoman siege of Malta now and then that'll be ANOTHER couple of forces I'll have to buy and paint (a tad earlier than the timeframe, maybe, but...) ;)

Seriously though, well done! It's such a great core engine and I'm sure this new variant will be as much fun as playing Lion Rampant (medieval or Dark Ages) and Dragon Rampant!!

I know a fair few ECW players at my club who'll be well up for this when it comes out...

So who do I talk to about selling my Trojan War variant? ;)

Seriously, I just want to hire the artist who did the paintings from this:

I'm trying to not consider buying into ECW, but ... ::)

Continuing from what Andy said; will the rules cover The Wars of Religion?

If not specifically then I suppose that they could be converted without too much difficulty?

Perhaps Border Reivers too?

Very much looking forward to seeing the rules when they are released!

Darrell.

Our distributors demand long lead-in times for all our books, so we have to commission year(s) in advance, I'm afraid.

Dan Mersey!  ;)

Ah, Jose Daniel Cabrera Peña. And it comes full circle - Jose's first piece for Osprey was the cover art for the very first OWG, Dan Mersey's Dux Bellorum.

God morgning !

Glad for all your comments, indeed long wait for the rules to be released, but faster than you think it is january 2017  ;D

Aren´t Warlord games producing a range for malta, found this on theirs FB page "...here are some forthcoming sculpts for our Wars of Religion range - Knights Hospitaller!"

The Pikeman´s Lament´s main focus in history are the Thirty Years War, the English Civil Wars and stretching away to Greate Northern War and the decline of the use of Pikes, yes we in Sweden used them that long...

BUT I don´t see any reason way the rules would not work for The Wars of Religion or The Border Reivers without too much difficulty. I my self will probably start up a Northern Seven Year War (1563–1570) project some times in the future using the The Pikeman´s Lament rules.

I hope you all will have a really good day !

Best regards Michael

They are really beautiful sculpts- I know that TAG are going to be doing a range of three for this period- estimated to be later this year- exactly when I do not know.

I'd certainly have to do some major reading on the period before I made an attempt (or wait for someone else more knowledgeable to do it!); what actually attracts me to The Wars of Religion is simply that I love the look of the period (please, no codpiece jokes!!) :)

Darrell.

I just saw the RSC's excellent production of Marlowe's The Jew of Malta, in which the fighting in the siege is represented through the medium of dance …

I'll look forward to these rules.  Maybe, by 2017, I'll have cleared enough space in the study to actually play something!

Yep, that'd be me  :D

I'm certainly going to look at using the rules for Border Reivers, to give my old Outpost models a run out. As Dalauppror says, I see no reason not to stretch the rules back by a few decades… it's just that we're focussing on the later period for flavour and detail.
