XP for soldiers
« on: 04 August 2015, 07:21:21 PM »
Like some here, i played Mordheim and i liked the fact that every man in the band win experience throught the games and evolve.
But, Frostgrave is really focus on the wizard and his apprentice. So, the soldiers must not be too powerful and eclipse the magic guys.

My two cents :

Soldiers earn XP by :
- Causing damage for 4 health or more: +1 XP
- Kill a creature with less than 3 starting health : +1 XP
- Leave the table with a treasure : +1 XP
- Survive a game : +1 XP

Soldiers earn one level each time they get 10 XP points.

When a soldier earn a level, he can:
- either become a « trusted follower » (only one time in the life of the soldier) : the soldier can have : standard equipement + 2 items

- either develop new skill (only one time in the life of the soldier) : Roll a D20 : 1-4 : M +1, 5-10 : F or S +1, 11-13 : A+1, 14-16 : W +1, 17-19 : H +2, 20 : magic : the soldier has spent too many time in the magic city of Frostgrave : select randomly one spell among the 80, the soldier can cast it like an apprentice.
The soldier keeps the skill if he progress.

- either progress : (the wizard must buy the needded items)
A Thug or a Thief can become an Archer, a Crossbowman ou an Infantryman.

An Archer or a Crossbowman can become a Tracker or a Treasure hunter.
An Infantryman can become a Man-at-arms or a Treasure hunter.

A Man-at-arms can become a Knight or a Templar.
A Tracker can become a Marksman or a Ranger.
A Treasure hunter can become An Apothecary or a Barbarian

I would simplify the combat experience by giving XP for killing an enemy model, rather than worrying about the number of wounds caused or the starting health of the enemy model.  It would also reduce time in accounting for experience gains midgame, although the soldiers would level more slowly.  Perhaps 2 XP for killing an enemy?

Regarding the ability to learn a random spell, I think it would make more sense for the spell to be chosen or randomly generated from the Wizard's list of known spells, or perhaps only from the Wizard's school of magic (I think this would be even better).  It seems unlikely that a soldier who has been in service of a Thaumaturge would suddenly start raising zombies.

Was thinking about that as well, but would just give them 1 xp for each game they survive.
They are "expert" soldiers allready, but still they would learn something from each conflict they are involved.

But I wouldn't allow them to have/use a spell, because it doesn't mean just by being "surrounded" by spells all the time you will have the knowledge to handle/use them ;)

Why not go the Mordheim route then and only give xp for surviving a battle? 5 xp is level up. Out of action, no xp. Something like that.
