Guy Ritchie King Arthur movie...
« on: August 11, 2015, 08:44:22 PM »
There probably will be a lot of Arthur on the tables in the next few years. Director Guy Ritchie is filming the first film of of a six film (Yes, I said SIX) series at the moment.
He is one of my favourite directors and has done some great films (Snatch, Sherloch Holmes with Robert Downey Jr, etc.) but after seeing the first pics it looks like he is determined to put it in the wrong century like most of the other versions.

I'd love an excuse to buy some of those Footsore and GB Arthurians.

The armour looks bizarre. He looks like he's wearing footballer's shin guards.

From the cast list, I see that well known man for all seasons of our age, David Beckham, has also landed a role...  lol

To keep things on topic, I've split discussion of the upcoming Guy Ritchie movie(s) out from the Arthurian 'Saga' supplement thread.

First Knight anyone....Game of Thrones cash in - inspired armour and costume certainly, perhaps got at knock down prices! why not use Bernard Cornwells Arthurian Trilogy it would be a no brainer for a series of films >:( :-I

Istm the Arthurian myth is one that has been retold so many times for so many different people and the truth behind it is so shrouded, that it could almost be set in any period, and probably the correct historical period is one of the least appealing (esp considering the god-awful King Arthur (2004)).

Personally, I prefer the knights in shining armour madness of stuff like Excalibur, for my Arthurian nonsense.

I think that the only thing that isn't appealing about the 'correct' historical period is that not one single film director has the ability to do the right thing with it. The premise of the 2004 movie was absolutely great...unfortunately, the final result was a complete mess.

I think this is a classic case of pandering to what is 'known'. Most ordinary people, if asked about King Arthur, will talk about armoured knights, the round table, etc, so that's 'safe ground' for a movie-maker. I still live in hope that the Cornwell series will be filmed...however we all know that even that would look 'wrong' (even in the book, a lot of it is potentially 'wrong' when describing military tactics and equipment, although it seems to not detract from the fact that it's a brilliant read...) as nobody seems to ever bother to research what late/post-Roman military gear looks like when doing films/programmes set in that era (e.g. look at the Roman gear in that 'Barbarians' series that was on History Channel a few years back... *shudder*)

Because retelling the story has generally contemporised it, it's arguable that the most historically accurate Arthur we could do now is set it in the present (or perhaps the second world war, etc).

Out of the topic but somehow related, Last Kingdom series from Bernard Cornwell is already being filmed as a tv series.

Excalibur still trumps everything else. Bloody brilliant (mostly).
The Clive Owen 'we're all Sarmatians' (even Ray Winstone) movie was truly, dreadfully risible and awful in too many ways. But at least it had a scantily clad Keira Knightley, so not all bad.
Give me 'The Sword in The Stone' or 'Monty Python and The Holy Grail' out of preference any day ;)

Didn't I read here on LAF somewhere that some of the Cornwell Dark Ages novels were being adapted by someone into an HBO/AMC style high-end mini-series? (No doubt aimed at riding on the coat tails of Game of Thrones... )

Edit: Aha - yes, as just mentioned again by Rui, just before I posted this!  :D

Agreed on all points! Love Excalibur, King Arthur w  Clive was a stinker, Cornwell would be amazing... Anybody see that series Camelot, shown on Starz here in the US. Terrible! But Eva Green got naked frequently, so that was nice...
The complaints I had abt Troy are the same: you spent a shit-ton of money making costumes, so make the right ones, and you were 'inspired' by a story to make a film, so film the goddamn story, not some half-assed re-imagining!

Rant off, sorry! ::)
