What's your starting Warband?
« on: 15 August 2015, 02:36:52 PM »
Hi All

I'm curious to find out what people who have started playing created for their starting warband. I've gotta admit I'm kinda stumped. So far I'm going with an Enchanter (probably going with Animate Construct, Grenade and Enchant Weapon) and of course an apprentice. But for the soldier choices I'm really undecided, so far I think 2 thugs, 2 archers, 1 tracker, 1 infantryman, 1 thief and a warhound seems to be the best warband I've come up with, even though I dont really get inspired by infantrymen.

How did other people handle warband creation? Did you go for some more expensive ones off the bat? or did anyone try not trying to for the maximum of 10 and field a smaller warband?

I'm going with a witch + apprentice. For the rest of the warband I'm thinking barbarian, 2 crossbowmen, infantryman and 2 thugs (or maybe thieves). I'm definitely taking Animal Companion as a spell, so I need room in the warband for a couple of bears or leopards. For the rest, I just like the bonus damage.

Basic plan is the thugs (or thieves) go after the treasure while the rest of the warband smacks the opposition around and the spellcasters throw Poison Darts at anyone who sticks his head out. It never hurts to be optimistic. :D

I'm going with enchanter and apprentice, 2 archers, a crossbowmen, 2 infantryman, a thug, a thief and a wardog.
The plan is to let the thief, thug and infantryman go for treasure supported by the wizard, apprentice and wardog while the missile troops set up where they can cover them and the treasure

They all seem so cool, but I started with a Chronomancer and after the 2nd game he got killed. So the band I am painting up now is a Necromancer and his Infantrymen fanatics.

Elementalist, apprentice, 2 treasure hunters, crossbow, 2 thugs and 2 thieves. Also took hand weapon + dagger on the wizard and apprentice.

Plan is to use buff spells to get the fight value of key models boosted asap while debuffing enemy shooting with call storm where I can.

With just 2 buffs my wizard can get to +6 fight which *should* help her dodge some incoming fire!

Though I have a strong opinion what school NOT to take (in almost everey TT I am not a friend of the "bad side", so ...), I was puzzled at first too.
Try to think it from the wizard's mentality, his path, his story or the reason You want him to be in Frostgrave. For instance my dwarfs are simply seeking fo gold. My other troup is lead by a demonhunter, searching for artefacts which might help him, killing demons on the way.
With that it was a lot easier to pick schools and spells.

Also, like the most I pick some thugs, some ranged weapons, a tracker, but also one hart-hitter, just to see how it will turn out with rules and setting. Currently I'm prepairing some Confro-molosser dogs for painting.

best wishes and good luck

I am still very much undecided which wizard to take. I am planning on taking two, so I have a spare warband for people wanting to try it out. My best friend is going for the Witch, which (ha!) is my personal favourite model too, but that's okay. I probably end up buying the models anyways.

I usually take the good guys so I figured it would be cool to take a good guy as second, but a Necromancer as my first, simply because I never take those in any game I play. I know they are not evil per sé, but they err on the darker side, which actually makes it more appealing to me.

So probably a Thaumaturge and Necromancer, though I am also quite taken by the Chronomancer model. To be honest, I like pretty much all of them. I think my least favourite model is the Elementalist, and the least appealing idea is the Soothsayer (not sure why) so I could still go for any other warband.

Theme is very important to me, so I am going to stick to the official models as much as possible, and so is my friend. I also want to build some fitting scenery. No Thawgrave, Sandgrave or whatever for me. I bought into Frostgrave for the setting and models in equal measure.

I'm building two warbands, one for me and one for my GF.

Mine will be: Enchanter, apprentice, treasure hunter, archer x2, crossbowman, thug x2, thief and war hound. Undecided on spells but Animate Construct will definitely be one of them.

For my GF: Sigilist and the rest the same as mine.

The Wizards were an easy choice. I'm a craftsman and my GF is a researcher so the ones I've picked fit our occupations pretty well!

The spread of soldiers was decided upon after reading @Calmdown's article here and to keep things simple for us whilst learning the game.

Some great builds here. I've read through Calmdowns article many times, but still finding it hard to build a warband with the cost available...All part of the fun though.

I think I'll have to squeeze in a Treasure Hunter, maybe for the Tracker, as they seem more suited to my play style, although loosing a ranged attack is a concern.

I'm tempted to run only 9 members and put a little trust into Animate Construct paying off, and maybe aim for a Small Construct until I can get the difficulty down for a Medium Construct

Good idea with the construct, I hadn't thought of that, definitely worth a go!

My biggest issue is I'm coming to wargaming from boardgames so don't really have a play style. I can see my GF and I playing a bunch of games until we've wrapped or heads around it and then starting over. Like you said...all part of the fun!  :D

Sigilist, Thaumaturg and Chronomancer were already taken in my gaming group, so at first I decided on the Enchanter.
But then I saw the new Elementalist sisters (cough Frozen girls) and as a father of two girls I had to have those. To be honest I enjoyed the Avatar tv series a lot and Isawa Tadaka of the Phoenix clan (LOT5R) is a favorite character of mine, so elementalist is probably the best fit for me.
I build me warband according to what builds I liked with the plastic soldier kit (+otherworld warhound :-*) I had such fun with the plastic kit. The second criteria was what I thought was fitting in the setting, such as a treasure hunter or thieves, and I ended up with something like the calmdown list:
2 crossbowmen, 1 archer, 1 treasurehunter, 2 thieves, 1 thug & 1 warhound. I think I ended up with a shoot and run type of list. I tried to play with that with the spell selection. I think I took 2 damage spells, the rest is all buffs and movement spells. Can't wait to get started with this game.
