Late Romans and foes - with even more Vandals 13/9/15
« on: 21 August 2015, 03:13:34 PM »
I'm currently basing up some Late Romans and opponents and I thought I'd start a little thread.

Here's the first unit of Roman guard cavalry (the Schola Scutatorium Prima), painted for me by Shaun Watson (Redzed); I did the shields and basing.  I'm going for deeper basing these days so that I can make the units look more animated (and to better protect the paintwork!).

Best, Simon

Very nice. It would be nice if late Romans were available in plastic.

Good looking unit Simon.   60mm deep?    Funny, in the olde days when WRG was king I made my cavalry bases 50mm instead of the recommended 40mm deep for that reason.   With scale creep 60mm is looking good!

I do like the idea of forming an army which has known named units.

Hi Garry,

These are 70mm deep.  I' ve decided to standardise on 67mm deep for future units in this army, though, because I can fit 5 such units in a 4L Really Useful.  It certainly is scale creep!  Not so long since it was 40mm.

Named units are great, I love the research.

Best, Simon

Here's the next unit; the Equites Dalmatae Passerentiaci from the army of the Magister Equitum in Gaul. Again painted by Shaun except for the shields and basing which I did. There's a little more on them here.

Love your basing, what product of flock do you use?  I really like the color/blend.

Hi Nevyen,

I use a mix of colours mostly autumn but with wintry colours mixed in.  I also use half a dozen different types of tuft and then dry brush the lot with Buff Titanium and matt varnish.

The dry-brushing is really effective, especially on long tufts- it makes the tips of the tuft look dried out.  Also brings the different colour tufts together.

This is a command stand depicting Saint Germanus of Auxerre, who was a militant bishop who supposedly led the Romano Britons to a victory over the Saxons and Picts in the early 5th Century. Minis were again painted by Shaun Watson (Redzed).
