What (and from where) are those 'Star' rules, please? I realized that I own an older (then free) copy of Six Gun Sound, but it only has 3 characterstics, and no advancement system.

Most of THW rulesets only have one (REP), sometimes three characteristics. I decided to expand them, hence my labelling them Grit (REP/Sand/Toughness), Shooting, Fighting, People (for meet and greet etc), Horsemanship (riding/driving) and Outdoorsman (perception, stealth etc).

I am unsure if the 'Star' rules also are in the free download of Chain Reaction (general rules to let you get familiar with THW reaction system, they have recently been updated again). But basically, when the Star gets hit and take damage (Stunned, OOF, OD), you roll the same number of d6 as REP (Grit in my case) and each 1-3 is reducing the damage by one level, 4-5 the damage stays and 6 the damage stays but also reduces your REP/Grit by one die the next time you try to do this. Reductions are OD to OOF, OOF to Stunned, Stunned to Carry on. So reducing an OD to a Carry on result you need to score 3 successes in the same go, but each 6 rolled also lower your dice pool by 1 the next time you try. I have it in the All Things Zombie: Final Fade Out rule set, so borrowed it from there.

In the full 6GS rules which I have, the original advancement rules are basically for each successful game that the character didn't run away or getting OOF/OD'd in they earn 1xp, and it takes a certain amount of XP to increase REP. Think it cost as many as the REP you want to increase to, so 3 to 4 is 4 XP then 4 to 5 is another 5 XP for a total of 9!

I decided to tweak them slightly and have my own simple system. Each episode the main character/ characters get 1 xp if they survive. To increase an attribute (excluding Grit!) from 3 to 4 cost one xp, from 4 to 5 two xp, from 5 to 6 three xp. And if you successfully used an attribute of 2 in the game, you will get an automatic increase to 3 at the end. Grit will go up by one when they've done an amount of successful episodes equal to the value they will increase to, so in John's case, when he's done FIVE episodes he will be a very hard man with Grit 5 (6)!!!

I will check out the High Moon rules, but not until next month as I have spent my hobby allowance and hope the explanations help.

Thanks for the views on MDF, I am hoping to call in at Crisis on my way home so will have a closer look then.
Argonor, thanks also. I was in Denmark earlier this year, you have some brilliant open air museums for   Viking buildings, very impressed.

Thanks. As I stated the old 6GS had no advancement, it's not quite precise, as for each 3 games not run away, the REP would go up by one, and each time the character runs away, it goes down by one, but that's all.

Ribe when the market was on, Trelleborg, twice, battery ran out on the camera the 1st time, Roskilde for the ships, the big open air museum just north of Copenhagen and the best was five grubbenhause I can't remember what the town was called.

Heddeby but I don't suppose that counts being south of the border

(Deep voiced intro, glints in black and white of people in old west attire, riding, shooting and fighting, interspersed with howls, many tentacles and shrieks and blood and gore)

The Civil War is over, but the four years of bloodshed where brother stood against brother has left scars running much, much deeper. Somewhere a door that was better left locked and bolted opened, and the nightmares and the dark fairy tales became real. In the vast nation, shadows can take on substance and monsters prowl in the night time hours, an almost perpetual dusk reigns and mankind is the prey. THIS is...

TALES FROM THE TWILIGHT TRAIL!!!!! (suspenseful music and fadeout)

This was fun, I had an almost forgotten mini from Black Hat miniatures of Monkey so decided to use him as John's mentor and Spirit Guide :)!

And the plot thickens...  :D

And until I actually play the next scenario, I have NO idea where this is going  lol! I play the scenario and as I do the write up the story line unfolds, trying to make it an entertaining read and to some degree binding these essential 'one off games' together.

I suspect however, that the Celestial Monkey will have further trials for John in mind...  ;).

He earned one more XP this time, so I think he needs to become a bit more savvy with people in this case, below are his new stats:

JOHN STORMCROW (Spirit Warrior)

Grit 4 (5)
Shooting 4
Fighting 4
People 4
Riding 3
Outdoorsman 4

Sorcery
Strong Willed (Grit counts as +1 for purposes of Fear and Sorcery)
Night Owl (John's LoS is ALWAYS a minimum of 12", regardless of lighting conditions)

Six shooter (mundane handgun)
Ghost Winchester (disregard Out of Ammo results, does NOT count as a magic weapon, normal bullets)
Knife
Horse (Quality 4)
Magic Jade Spear (Use Grit/ Strong Will if higher than Fighting, add +2D in Melee as per two handed weapon, glows when supernatural beings are within 24", always count as at least 1 success even if all dice fail in Melee roll, can kill beings only susceptible to magic weapons)

Which is exactly how I think a narrative campaign should be done. It spells trouble to plan ahead what future scenarios are going to contain, as each game and its actual outcome may heavily influence what the storyteller wants to do next.

GM'ing RPGs back in the time when I could actually find time to do so (and players also able to), I improvised my way through the campaigns, as the decisions of the players was more important to me than following a set storyline.

Again great story telling. I really enjoy how you have used drinking glasses to demonstrate the flying state of the flying fiends. Great Idea!
I'm looking forward to which powers John will rise with his new teacher.

Been RPG'ing for 20+ years, I prided myself on improvising most of the campaigns, letting the players have fun and creating an exciting story together. For this little project, I am more than happy to outline an entertaining scenario and then knit it together into some kind of continuing story  :D.

Again great story telling. I really enjoy how you have used drinking glasses to demonstrate the flying state of the flying fiends. Great Idea!

Thanks mate, the glasses is an idea I nicked, I've seen several others use in different scenario's, mostly superheroes for flying minis, but it is a simple idea that works very well!

I am still pondering a little about the exact mechanics with sorcery but will make some headway next week again  :D.

Cheers mate.

Both the werewolves and the flying fiends are made by Westwind in their Gothic Horror range.

I just cashed out for invested in High Moon (pdf), and it has the Star rules. Busy reading it now, but when I'm through it, I shall write a small piece on it in a thread of my own!
