Ladders and stairs
« on: 16 September 2015, 07:07:36 PM »
Not really a rules question, more looking for opinions.

Many of the buildings we have ladders and/or stairs modelled on to them.  Would you stick to the half movement to climb when using them, or go with normal movement?

On one hand, you could argue they're as decrepit as the rest of Frostgrave, hence the movement reduction; on the other hand allowing normal movement can made it a tactical decision on whether to climb a wall slower or risk being in a bad position but moving quicker (in my game moving up some stairs would have allowed me to collect a treasure but only being behind one set of cover, whereas climbing a wall would have taken two turns, but kept me at -3 all the way)..

Any thoughts?

I'd personally say full on stairs half on climbing a wall.

Do you mean half on climbing a ladder (as that's already the rule for a wall)?

I would go full on ladders too (if not, why did I even paint them up last night).  lol

In Infinity I use full on ladders/stairs and only use half movement on things like actually climbing that would involve you ignoring your personal weapon just so you could get a bloody grip and move upwards rather than fall the hell down.

Reasoning most people are capable of going 1 foot in front of the other and 1 hand over the top of each other to scale a incline if something regular like stairs or a ladder are there to assist!!!!
What I do: Chef by trade, ass by choice; but I play the following when I'm not being either.
Infinity: Haqqislam is my main and then I own ALL THE THINGS!

I agree with the general consensus that full moves for stairs and ladders seems reasonable.

One slighty thorny issue I've come across in Mordheim with this sort of thing is animals - reasonable for a dog to climb stairs (for example), but not ladders or walls. Maybe worth considering a house rule. I think my group will be going down that route for Frostgrave; anything obviously humanoid can climb anything but animals are restricted to stairs.

I too believe the stairs and ladders should be full movement.  My point of view tem from the fact that they are designed to make going up easier than climbing (or falling).

As for the animal and ladder issue, I think you have to carry it up so... half movement for that?
No you can't carry up your armored war elephant.

At our games we allow full movement at ladders and stairs as it makes the game more dynamic.

In an intact building with 3+ floors (we use 4Ground houses) a model would need about 4 turns to get on the attic (to get a treasure for example) and back, if ladders would be half movement. Also, climbing the wall outside would be as fast as the ladder inside - feels wrong.
There is more action in the game if you can use ladders for your advantage - we like it! :)

Maybe a bit off topic, but what's an easy way to create some ladders and maybe boardwalks?

I'm always surprised at how expensive terrain is, i would prefer a cheap DIY alternative. :-)

I'm thinking of going to the hobby shop and buy some thin wood, but you guys maybe have some experience?

Planning on doing the same myself.
Got some 'lollipop' sticks from my hobby store as the planks and BBQ skewers as the longitudinal pieces for bridges/boardwalks.
Ladders will be skewers and skewers as rungs, though I'm contemplating how figures will stay on them when they are only half way up.

Hope that helps.

we have ruled that ladders are full movement except for animals (except for spiders who we said are never half movement)

as far as modelling goes I use wooden coffee stirrers and kebab skewers and have experimented with ladders where you can slot the edge of a base in for part movement.

Have any of you tried climbing up a ladder in any form of armour, never mind holding a weapon or shield? :o

I have, back in my re-enactment days lol, and there is no way you could move at the same speed as on a stair! I'd say half speed on a ladder.

But did you try climbing the outside of a crumbling building in full armour?  That is the question!

which is why only Thieves, Trackers and Rangers should be allowed to climb... ;)
