Stairs? Scale or oversized?
« on: January 13, 2010, 12:23:41 AM »
What's your take?

I am doing pretty out of scale steps for my 15mm Sudan buildings (3/16th of an inch steps (how'd I come up with THAT measurement?   ;) ) , with magnet tops so the washer based figs can stand on each step level)

15mm stairs are just so small, but they DO add a sense of scale and harmony.

Oh well, I went with playability.  Doesn't look so bad.  I think.   ::)

I know the major General advocates oversized steps, juts wondered what y'alls interpretation is.

Honestly, it depends. I've done both but generally it comes down to whether I want to be able to position figures on them. For some Necromunda terrain I went for oversized steps with gaps big enough for slotta bases to fit into, holding the model in place. As it was industrial terrain it wasn't that noticeable. For temple pieces I've usually gone for realistic, but left levels up the stairs where figs could be stood.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Very smart!

My simple   Khartoum style buildings are two story at most, so levels and in scale steps unfortunatley won't work, but I will steal your idea in the future!!!

The gaps idea is great, for those kinda stair case.

When I was doing the Arnica stuff I managed to cast a set of stairs with several rare earth magnets placed just beneath the surface of the resin so that figures with metal bases would stick to the steps.

That's what I do, but just underneath a coat of apckle/paint.  Still, in 15mm, they really won't work in scale (at least not for me, the magnets pull the figure down at an angle across several steps)

Scrap, I love your Arnica stuff, BTW.   I guess Murph and mitch are about ready to unleash them?

To echo Dewbakuk, I use scale steps with levels.  For two storey buildings I'd put the level in at the top of the ground (first in USA?) floor.  Though the rules might need to be configured to work with this, so that one flight equals one bound of movement or whatever.  Does mean that the actual stairs won't get crowded but I'm content with that compromise.  There's no right way of course, except the way you like it!   :D

sounds like a nice idea - custom stair base

I use scale steps and levels too

Dang!  Nice forum!  All sorts of ideas!  I'm gonna try some.

Gorden's residence is about to go three stories, just so I can try the level thingy.
