So, the other night I was trawling through my old 5th Edition Bretonnians to dig out  some archers for someone, and ended up getting sucked into the zeitgeist of all that cheesey Herohammer goodness
Ah, Bretonnians!  I always wanted to build a Bret army, just because they have the potential to be so darn beautiful.  I've got a couple boxes of Bret figures in the game closet, but never enough to build a whole army, and now they are OOP.... sigh.   :'(

I did manage to get a couple of these guys done, though (after about six months of starting them...), and I'm quite chuffed with them...
I'd say that "chuffage" is well deserved.  That archers and their leader look great!

Great archers, CONGRATIULATIONS!  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Brets look that nice on tabletop because they're Perry sculpts!  ;)

Very versatile miniatures as well, one can get them to play from fantasy to historical... Mine went from Oldhammer to WAB Age of Chivalry, traveled to Mordheim, to England as SAGA Normans and are currently raiding in Westeros!  lol

Nicely done Iain! 8) I do love your painting style. The heavy shadowed face on the archers really suits them!

I like the Bretonnian archers a lot.  What were your steps for painting the faces, and did you use any washes?

I love this era of Bretonnian - and after going through a must sell everything period -was one of the few range of figures I kept some of - have slowly be replacing the ones I did sell over recent years

Great to see these to motivate me to actually do something with mine.

I had seen your blog previously as some else said, also when researching Bretonnians- and love your clean painting style.

Cheers Dave

Thanks gents, very much appreciated!

I like the Bretonnian archers a lot.  What were your steps for painting the faces, and did you use any washes?

I mix my own flesh tone using Humbrol 62 as a base, with 33 added to do the under coat, and 121 to highlight. I start with a very dark undercoat, adding more 62 to the mix as I go up the contours of the face, until it's just plain 62. Then start adding 121 until the very last highlights (literally only the tips of the noses, knuckles and so forth) are pure 121. No washes, just a variation of the "triad" system mentioned by Vermis, but with about 8 or 9 layers instead of 3...

I added a banner to the standard bearer. Knocked up on the computer and printed on a home printer.

Proudly not painting Wars of The Roses since... ever

It seems many who were historical wargamers at heart but hadn't seen the light yet hoarded these lovely Perry Bretonnians – me included. Reminds me of my own treasure chest, brimming with fully painted minis, neglected for years, regularly on my sales list, but never had the heart to sell them. After visiting your thread I feel enticed to take another look at them… ::)

Great project, marvellous paintjobs on those first few. :-*

Yep, agreed...it was an option for a well supported lovely sculpted quasi-medieval army.  I think it had an exceptionally strong following from the early days.  Lovely stuff.

Great project; and personally I still play and love the "Red Era" aesthetic of 5th edition :)

Warhammer as we know it is no more, and these aren't quite old enough to be all cool and Oldhammer, and there doesn't seem to be much of a 5th Edition gaming community out there.

5th Edition Fantasy was a game I always wanted to buy, but never could. The basic set was fantastic, with two great armies being showcased — I loved both lizardmen and Bretonnia. I've considered purchasing a copy off eBay, but, as you say, the community for 5th edition is not very big — Too old to be in print, too new to be considered "Oldhammer" (What's the cutoff point for most, 3rd?). So I've let the opportunities slide. I have a Bretonnian batallion but the figures aren't as good, in my opinion. Besides, I kinda hated the newer, darker Bretonnia with the malnourished, deformed peasants. I really dug the Leightonesque depiction from 5th.

Are there any other fans of 5th out there? Maybe we could form a small community here! :D

I came in late 5th so that stuff definitely gives me a warm fuzzy nostalgia. Downside is I've always been a wood-elves player and they didn't have much support round that era. But it does sincerely warm my heart to see your bretonians from that era. Now I was of to buy Dragon Rampant and start playing fantasy again with that but the osprey website is broken.  >:(
