Homebrew wargame
« on: October 07, 2015, 06:40:25 PM »
Hello

I have written a short wargame but do not have the opportunity to play test it. I thought this would be a good place to share it and get some feedback.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/z1uh1f1qweo6fzy/Wargame.docx?dl=1 The game itself

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9fr8iiun7bptad5/Goblins%20of%20Black%20Mountain.docx?dl=1 Goblins

https://www.dropbox.com/s/1z0vtmn6eg7qnod/Dwarfs.docx?dl=0 Dwarfs

https://www.dropbox.com/s/vfsnmiln6kx31kl/Spawnborn.docx?dl=0 Lizardmen

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ikiub98c2odlnd2/magic.docx?dl=0 Magic

I have tried to make these direct links, if it comes up with the dropbox page choose direct download and click the "no thanks proceed to download" option (unless you have/want dropbox)

I wrote the rules for the fantasy setting me and my university housemates had invented to use with our Warhammer armies but they should work with any 28mm-ish figures. Our world building probably took more inspiration from Terry Pratchett than anything else but was quite an eclectic mix.

The things I am most worried about are: Is movement fatigue to extreme/too much bookkeeping? Does the moral system work well? and does the army selection process make sense?

I have aimed for a sort of large skirmish type game where models can move as individuals or form into units. I wanted to be able to have mixed units whilst avoiding too much complexity. Whilst we initially were using Warhammer rules they were a bit clunky for the small games we were playing so I wrote these to try and fill the gap.
The armies are separate documents and have an equipment list like Mordheim and then a list of units which I tried to keep fairly concise. We created our setting by playing a game of microscope so the armies have a mix of things, some more original than others.
I have tried to keep army selection fairly loose. Our setting was fairly generic so the lists should be fairly adaptable.
The magic lists are a bit rushed so might be a bit unbalanced. I have tried to preserve the danger of spellcasting from Warhammer but allow a greater choice and variety of spells.

I will try and get some pictures of armies to give a better idea of scale.
If word documents are a problem I could save them as PDFs. Is there a better way to put up the files than dropbox?

I have attached a picture of an example lizardman army with 1 commander (unfortunately it is a bit blurry). I have tried to display several different formation types. the pterodactyls are in loose order, the big lizards are in close ranks and the skinks on the right are a rabble. the group immediately to the right of the coatle are forming a defensive knot around the wizard.

The drummer amongst the spearsmen is a more elite model with a higher command value. Along with the drum this should allow them to keep up with the bulk of the army however it is combinations like this that I want to check work in practice.

Below is the list showing how I chose the units, unfortunately I don't have any painted models for more complex units like war engines with crew.

General
coatle

Requisition 1
3 sky riders with spears and slings

Requisition 2
3 sky riders with throwing spears and Single handed weapon

Requisition 3
10 bloodborn warriors with spears and shields

Requisition 4
5 bloodborn guards 1 with drum and single handed weapon, 4 with pole arm and shield

Requisition 5
waterborn priest with staff and single handed weapon

Requisition 6
15 waterborn braves, 10 with blowpipe and SHW, 5 with throwing spear and shield

(Sorry the photo is even worse than I first thought)
