Starship Troopers game with LaserStorm Rules - AAR 10-24-15
« on: October 28, 2015, 06:45:14 PM »
Randy and I played a Starship Troopers themed game this past weekend using the LaserStorm rules.   I made a few adjustment for the game, but the activation and core stats followed the basic rules.

I used my new bug swarms and some old 15mm rebel mini models for the marines.  The game had 6 Mobile Infantry troopers facing off against 36 bug swarms.  Definitely more in line with the book than the movie.

It was fun and it played quickly enough that we made some adjustments and played the game a second time.

More details and pictures can be found on my blog.  http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/10/laserstorm-starship-troopers-aar-102415.html

Nice. :)

In my experience, anytime you have a very small force of powerful troops versus a horde of less powerful troops, luck can play a big role and can cause problems in the game.

Do you feel it's much more difficult to balance these more asymmetric games, than the more equal setups of the earlier Epic game? (Well, Epic miniatures game) Or would it take just a bit more tinkering?

I wouldn't say much more difficult, its just that with only 6 models on one side some good or bad (depending on perspective) die rolls can make a huge difference.

"The MI troopers did a much better job this time.  So much so that I feel like I over fixed the game after our first play-through." Does sound like it's tricky, but remember old naval sighting procedures: one long, one short, straddle.  ;)

Looking forward to giving this a try. Be gentle, Sean.  lol

All Quiet On The Martian Front is very asymmetrical, and the way we play is to keep the armies scaled to a size that only takes 60-75mins to play through the scenario, then swap sides and play from the other end!  Player with the most VP/casaulties/whatever in aggregate wins.

It certainly doesn't solve the problem that with only 6 models bad luck hurts more, but at least both players have to deal with that issue on the way to finding your victory.  Just a thought.

I stumbled here because I really want to get my hoard of tyranids out to play a Starship Troopers style bug hunt and can't face opening 40k again.  I shall give Laserstorm a look!  Thanks!

Not to steal the limelight or... something... from Laserstorm (I just bought and DLed it meself) but have you seen the Future Combat sci-fi version of Victory Decision, up in the WWII child board, for your 28mm needs? It's the reason I've held onto my own tyranids - I know what frame of mind you're in about 40K! It's a (great?) grandchild of Mongoose's old SST game, of sorts, with a few Epic genes and others in there. It even has a space-bug expansion! ;)
