All one colour grey or a mixture of greys and browns ;)

 lol

Well, flags_of_war posted this example on another thread and I reckon that should be just the right impression given it's location....

If you need to see good stone colours for a period house this is the one that i have been using as a ref, when planning to build my own Fortified Manor.

It's Provanhall House in Glasgow.

But you probably know this place, dont you?
 ;)

I don't think I have time to do the real colour

it takes a couple of hundred years to achieve that colour of stone. The pink in the above picture is the colour of the fresh cut stone the other colours are the same stone after hundreds of years of weathering.
So the question is what colours do you use on a model?

Usually an abstraction of reality works best at the reduced scale,  just presenting an effect rather than a copy. I'd be tempted to do a main brown with a secondary tone to break it up and then a third tone for picking out the odd stone.

When it comes to damp mountainous places I'm always for the stern grey of granite.

If you look at this wall made from stones of the Rhine, you can see that it's all one colour:

Black drybrushed grey ;D

Lovely build by the way  8) 8)

Seriously though, with regard to the stone colour, if you have some browns/tans/grey spray paints then give a few areas a quick blast form a distance to give a tonal 'speckle' effect nd then go over with the dry brushing, washes etc. Works a treat  :)
