Couldn't agree more! Gloss varnish has an effect where it increases the perceived tonal range of paint making the darks darker and the lights brighter. I brush varnish everything and, even though I use matt, it goes through that initial glossy stage where the colours just pop!
Have you considered doing that with the frogs too?
Yes when I was gloss varnishing these I did look over at the toads and they looked a bit wrong sitting there all perfectly matt! But I'm thinking when something gets very cold it has that matt frosting and really hot coals or fire is pretty matt so maybe that's how the fire and ice toads should look. The toad eyes will get a lick of gloss though. That always has a nice effect.
So what are you making next?
I have a little selection of creatures and terrain bits in the pipeline once all the ks parcels are sent out. That'd be after the new website is launched though.
