Anglo Zulu War game
« on: November 22, 2015, 03:50:15 PM »
We played a fun Anglo Zulu War game yesterday using the Soldiers of the Queen rules.  We had about 14 Zulu units face off against two companies each of the 60th and 24th, two small Natal Mounted Police units, a unit of Boers and two units of NNC.

The British had a pretty good go of it, but were ultimately outflanked by the Zulus.  The amount of fire the British were able to  put out drove the Zulus back a few times but the British right was not as well defended as the left, where the major Zulu attack came from.  Ultimately the collapse of the forces on the right threatened the center enough and then the 60th collapsed on the left.

At that point it was all over but for the running.  Here are some pictures.  Enjoy!

The initial disposition of the troops.

The players consider their options

The Mounted Police ride to slow the Zulu advance.

The Zulus advance anyway.

The British are being whittled down, but return fire pretty well for a turn before the company of the 24th in the center runs low on ammo and is charged by the Zulus.

With one unit still on their flank the British on the hill are in a precarious position and when that unit charges they are quickly overrun.

Nifty looking game. Too bad the British commanders chose to emulate Pulleine rather than Wood...  lol

I mostly blame the commander of the 24th who failed all of his command rolls for the first three turns of the game and the Natal Mounted Police, who were both caught and wiped out by the same unit of Zulus without having affected almost anything.

Yeah, it was all their fault.

More eye-candy for the benefit of yours truly's inspiration for this winter's Africa project (centered on the Zulu War)!

Soldiers of the Queen, you say...

Seems units are 8 (cav 4) strong, which is quite manageable for starters - maybe I should check them out?

Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Unit size isn't really fixed in the game.  You need enough figures that you can do casualty reduction and still have a decent sized unit.  Casualty reduction, when you get it, takes away half of the figures.  I would guess that 8 infantry is the least you could do to still do that.

There is no reason why units couldn't be 20 man for the game either though for people that like to have a lot of figures on the table.

Eight figure units gave us a nice representation and still a good bit of room to move about.

Thanks, sounds good to me.

Now, if I could just find the darn rules somewhere... seems they are OOP at the moment??
