Horatio Class Airship (modified)
« on: 24 November 2015, 01:39:05 AM »
So, this was the first ever thing I designed for my laser, but I got sidetracked with other things as the program I was using to design it didn't prove up to the task. When I started with a new program a new whim had taken me and I ended up creating the Martian ship instead.

Well, back on track now and here is the WIP of my Horatio Class Airship

Just started on the hull yesterday night, the top of the ship has been designed for about 5 months.

I've got the stack, boiler, screw, rudders, and a gun up front to add yet, but this is where it's at right now.

With such a large superstructure and short hull she looks more like a tug? A nice tug though.

OK, due to the sounds of folks pretty much ignoring my first build, I've made some modifications.  I initially tried to build in deck space for action to happen on, but taken the feedback on board and shrunk the superstructure a bit, moved it back a bit, and added a gun to help give it the profile I'm after.

Pictures? And give the people some time to respond, 1 day is a bit in a hurry to act like that.

I think you've got the wrong idea mate.  I think making changes based on feedback is a good thing, is it not?

Also, I've been on the boards a while, just not so much on the VSF ones as a poster.  You can see the number of views quite. Easy to see the amount of traffic a post generates.  I could see that lots of folks had seen the ship, but largely ignored it, except for you who I'm thankful for, who posted some feedback. Sorry if it came off as winy or negative.

Looks better. Still lots of playing surface.

First one looks like it could capsize. Hmm, capsizing 'nef. Never thought about that.

No worries mate, no offence taken.

Still can't see any pics, when this page loads I see a ton of green space that after 15 seconds or so compresses to just text?

Only recently saw the post, Fergal, so you may chide me for not checking back often enough.

Real life [tm]... Tell me about it.

Agreed the changes have helped, but I'm still finding the superstructure 'top heavy'. I think it's more the 'upper deck' being extended out. I know it's not uncommon in predreadnoughts, but, here, I see it as overshadowing the main deck by so much as to feel awkward.

I do know seeing figs on the decks help mitigate, and (Saint) Major General Rederring made the point that "[t]he model is simply a symbolic placeholder for the ship, in a game with a tremendously compressed ground scale..." Still, this looks awkward to me, no matter how nice a jolly bunch of targets, er, figs you can crowd in on top.  ;)

And, the wheel house(?) may be a SMIDGE tall... (I know, I know, room for 'figures waving guns over their heads...' lol )

How soon do you think you'll have THIS up for sale?

Doug

Colour me cantankerous but I really liked the top heavy look from your initial design.  As was mentioned above, it was giving an excellent vibe of utility boat/tug.  I could just imagine a couple of over large deck hoops and a massive winch behind the superstructure and large davits around the rim.  :D
