Fun rules 28mm/50 figs roll call?
« on: December 20, 2015, 12:11:13 AM »
Hello,

I am building up armies in 28mm for SAGA but wanted to know what else is out there and that people like a lot.

Target is around 50 figs a side, fluid games rather too much involved if it is a way to describe the gameplay

I own:
-SAGA
-Lion Rampant
-DBA (but I'd rather play the two above, even if I find it fun)
-Hail Caesar (a bit too demanding in terms of figure number)

I am interested in Dark age, Crusades, possibly Ancient.

Anything else out there that people like a lot?

thanks for the advice
Brax

Lord of the Rings (buy GW) is a surprisingly flexible rules system that is very easy to adapt to different settings.
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/
And for Ultra-modern Wargaming check out Hotel Zugando at http://ultramoderngaming.blogspot.co.uk/

I find that LotR can get a bit 'silly' as trees can get in the way of an arrow being loosed etc.

I much refer the Lion Rampant rule set for both Late and Early (so called Dark Ages) wargaming. It's a seriously amusing set of rules!!  :D

You should also give Dux Brit a go as it's very good too.

I've only played Saga once, I enjoyed the game, but I'm not familiar with the rules so I cannot really comment fairly.

Hope that helps?

Cheers,
Darrell.

thank you Rob, Athe, I will have a look.

I stumbled also on
Soldiers of God which seems to have a bit more figs
Pig wars, apparently doesn't bring much more than SAGA that I own already
Dux Britannarium seems more focus on Arthurians
Dux Bellorum still Arthurians

Soldiers of God:

Ah, now, this in=s an interesting set that I've read through and decided upon it for the Hastings demo at Salute next year. We're about to give it a try at the club even though they don't realise it yet!

From reading the rules it would work brilliantly for what I have in mind for the demo. Not too complicated and supporting units (Ceorls) can play a hand in combat (with the Thegns/ Huscarls in the front rank. I reckon it would work best for larger scale battles.

Pig Wars:

It is great fun- I haven't played it for many a year but I remember it being very amusing! I wouldn't really compare it to Saga as it's much more scenario driven. Mind, I've only played Saga once so I'm not really qualified to comment!

Darrell.

I also like the Lotr rules very much. Their adaption to almost any desired era is extremely easy. But one should remember that it is really a skirmish game and nothing else. Every model is used separately and also represents one single soldier. The scale of the rules is really 1:1. 50 models per side is indeed the maximum number of models recommended by the rules. With 50 models a fluent game is still well possible, but if many models are in melee, the melee phase may need some time. I personally think, that the rules are more fun, with not that many models. In any case they need relativly much terrain to give cover or defending advantages. Using the terrain and using heros (which might be simple captains in historical games) are the most important factors in the game.
