Natives of the Upper Sudan?
« on: November 30, 2008, 09:35:17 PM »
Hi.

What sort of (native) tribes, brigands, opponents would pulp heroes encounter in the Upper Sudan?

I guess they would be mostly 'black' - but what minis would be appropriate to use? I was thinking, that as I'm talking pulp, maybe Mahdists and Fuzzy-Wuzzies could be used (I'm going to aim for Darkest Africa natives for the Jungle-and-Savanne areas, anyway)?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Not so much Fuzzy-Wuzzies but uniformed Mahdists would be fine. Also various tribal Africans that the slave traders preyed on, such as the Bari. Foundry DA naked tribesmen are a good choice ('covering thy shame' doesn't seem to have caught on with the folks of this area). Any of the Arab-looking types from the DA range would work for the Sudanese slaving expeditions that made their lives miserable (after the Sudan fell to Mahdi the slavers could be Mahdists too).

The Mahdists lost control of the Sudan in 1898, but there were various mini revolts trying to revive the idea, right through into the 20th Century, so it isn't totally ridiculous to have Mahdists in a 20s Pulp setting (even if the real ones may not have dressed like their forebears).

I think Mahdi reappeared for a short period during midwar, but it was supressed very easily. The term was "the true Mahdi". I might be mistaken but it is a good startpoint.

I would also say that Somali/Ethiopian types could be used as well!

OK, thanks!

I'm going to have a few adventures in Egypt, first, but then eventually the clues will lead the heroes and villains further up the Nile and perhaps to East Africa  ;)
