British Commandos
« on: 14 January 2016, 09:07:45 PM »
Here are some British Commandos with Bren guns.  They are from Black Tree Designs that I painted for them.  I'll be the first to admit that this is not my main area of interest, but they were very fun to paint.  I also enjoyed researching the uniforms and learned a few things along the way too.  So a win win all around I think :)  Let me know if I missed the mark with these guys.

Nice work... but the uniforms seem too brown. That may just be the photo though 8)

Looking at the pictures they do look to brown.  Of course, in person they look different  :?

The scabbard for the F/S fighting knive should be a very dark/black brown, the knives's grip, black.
The kneeling bloke's 'at should be green.

After staring at these guys for a bit, I've decided to change a few things.  I went back and toned down the brown in the uniforms.  The more I looked at them the more brown I saw.  I also looked at my notes I made about the uniforms.  I saw that I originally planned to paint the knit cap green but for some reason when I was painting I thought it wasn't a knit cap and was brown.  I definitely should pay more attention to my notes :)  Thanks Harry Faversham and Calimero for the advice.

You're welcome mate, one thing I always do is pick out the Bren's carrying handle in the same brown as I paint the stock, you'll be surprised how much it brings the gun to life.

Be sure to share the re-worked figures please....
Commandos carried out some of the most amazing raids of the war.

It's not actually a carrying handle it's for changing the barrel :)
But brown is good.

In fairness people always used it for carrying the gun, too ... even if they weren't supposed to.

In my experience trying to carry a Bren that far forward of the balance point puts a severe strain on the hand and wrist.

You can be as snarky as you like, you're still wrong.
The carry handle is for carrying the barrel, it's attached to the barrel and comes free with it when you release the barrel assembly.
However, I'm sure there are numerous pictures of troops carrying their Brens by the 'carry' handle that you can cite for reference so don't mind me.

Everyone take a deep breath... maybe the handle is for carrying the hot barrel that you are changing out.  Anyone who has fired a gun before knows that the barrel can get very hot.  I can not imagine how hot a barrel would be if you had to change it out after putting a few hundred rounds through it.  On the other hand, I can think of a couple of things that soldiers have used for purposes that they were not originally designed for.  So both are right :)

Here are the updated figures.  The uniforms have been given a green wash, but that doesn't show well in the pictures.  You can see it more on the guy on the left.  The controversial carrying/changing handle has been given a wood color paint over, and the knit cap has been painted a muted green.

Again, thanks for the feedback.

No, you are wrong.

Is this other handle for removing a red hot butt then?
