Help me re-discover a film from my youth...
« on: January 21, 2016, 04:08:55 AM »
This has been bugging me for several years and I've found no answer.  When I was a kid (perhaps 10-12, so think early 90's) I found a movie where (for some reason) a group of Japanese are brought to Europe on a diplomatic mission of some sort.

My memory is a bit hazy but I remember a number of key scenes.  In essence there is a competition between European fighting tech and Japanese armour/weapons.  I only remember a few scenes.  One involves comparing an early firelocke of some sort to a Japanese bow, an organ gun is used as well.  I don't remember the background of the film, but by the end a Samurai ends up fighting a Knight and he is able to slice down the center of the armor with his katana, killing the "evil" European knight.

I'm sure it's some terrible film, but it drives me nuts that to this day I can't figure out what the movie is/was.  Can anyone help me out?  Horrible late 80's, early 90's film where a Samurai ends up fighting a Knight and cutting him nearly in half.  lol

I need closure on this...this is the forum with the most diverse group of people on it, so I'm asking LAF's help.

I think it could be "Kabuto".
The german version was called "Shogun Mayeda".

That must be it. Turns out the entire thing is on YouTube...I may punish myself later just to verify.  Looks absolutely terrible.

Have fun doing so...but at your own risk  lol

If you ever have the chance to see "After the Rain" (Ame Agaru) do so, it's quite good, and written by Kurosawa  ;)

I just flipped through it and it's definitely the right one.  Terrible from what I've watched, but this has now been put to rest.  Many thanks upon thine head!

Not as bad though, as the film where a modern day Japanese army unit end up back in time.......
