Kettle Run - WW2 scenario for I Ain't Been Shot, Mum! rules
« on: 07 December 2008, 07:22:10 PM »
Hi folks.

I ran a scenario about the danish volunteers in world war two fighting for germany. It's based on a book called "under hagekors og dannebrog" from 1998.

The scenario was set in may 1942 when the freikorps was in Demjansk trying to defend the demjansk kessel/pocket. This pocket contained some 95.000 german soldiers and was kept alive by an air bridge and an opening through the russian front as narrow as 500 meters at some points.

Naturally the russians tried to attack at the point were this opening was thinnest. Russian doctrine at the point and the fact that very little besides thin trees, low brushes and swamps were in the area gave some bloody battles. Almost no vehicles saw action in the area around the swamps as they were of little use on the soft ground.

Interesting scenario, I haven't seen many that are infantry only affairs. 8)

Nice work.  I really like all infantry affairs when wargaming.  I have never used IABSM.  I sometimes get tempted to buy a copy but end up resisting and sticking with Battlefront WW2.  One day I will crumble.

Hehe well I think the easiest description is "something completely else than FOW"  ;)

It's not a competative game at all!

Battlefront WWII is not Flames of War.  I hate that game.

Check out the gallery.  Battlefront WWII is a hard game to break away from and try something new.

HAhaha.. Sorry! I was too quick on the trigger!

I run into the FOW-thing often. Everybody around here has got WWII miniatures for that game and it's nigh impossible to explain the notion that the same minis can be used in another game...

I'll admit I have only ever tried a demo of it... and I wasn't impressed:
On turn 1 all his inf dug in.. in a single turn! Then 5 bren carriers came at me between buildings.. I stated that I wanted to shoot the first. That wasn't possible! So much for tactics.
Then his inf assaulted my  semovente tank in the rear... and I expected it to be toast. To my luck the tanks could apparantly shoot their front mg 360 degrees, so the inf got toasted!

I'd had enough of that game for an entire life after that. The first battle actually started when I said that I found playing russians vs. brits a strange demo? Unless you wanted to show just how much history is contained in the game...  ;)

Oh well - Enough of my rant!

I know fire & fury ACW - seemed quite good from the 4 times or so I played it. I think the warmaster guys had a look in it too.

Lots of guys I talk to about gaming tend to get an empty expression on their faces when I mention that I use GM minis for other games... And when I that I buy minis that are not manufactured for a particular ruleset, they back off...  lol

Battlefront WWII has very similar basing to IABSM.  Two figures on a base = a squad.  There are no Big Men.  A leader is based up the same as the troops.  1 tank model = 2 or 3 tanks.  Artillery is off board.  One of my favourite scenarios is "A Difficult Affair II" which is an infantry only game based on a small clash during the epic battle of Kursk.  A company of Germans has to clear a small ridge of a Soviet Infantry coy.  You could probably use the scenario for IABSM.  Link for it below.

Thankyou for your report and photos. They all look great especially as commented by others on good old infantry affairs.

Paul I wasn't aware of 'Battlefront' but will look at this for future reference.

Thanks again.

Helen

Hi Helen.  They have the whole Kokoda campaign and Milne Bay for free download in the scenario section. Link below.

http://www.fireandfury.com/scenarios.shtml

The game has been around for a long time, pre-FOW era.  Apparently in the Dark Ages, Battlefront the miniatures company approached Fire and Fury to produce a set of rules.  Battlefront WWII was born.  However, some sort of problem occurred and Battlefront the miniatures company pulled out and later released FOW.

They are a good set of rules for using 15mm minis to play out historical scenarios.
