Comparison of Old West Buildings
« on: February 10, 2016, 04:34:49 PM »
Does anyone know of a site or page that has a side by side comparison of buildings.  I am interested in seeing how they might look together before I mix and match.  Most interested in Knuckleduster and 4Ground.  Also if anyone has used Plast Craft, and if so, are a good fit?  Do they have roofs that are detachable like 4Ground and Knuckleduster?

Thanks,

Frank

The only issue you'd have fitting any of them together is the paint.  4Ground come pre-painted and most of the others do not.  So as long as you're willing to re-paint the 4Ground or can paint the others similar, the aesthetic would work.

Knuckleduster (Tri-City Laser) are made from wood instead of MDF and their textures are different.  In general all the ones I've tried work well enough together (Sarissa, Knuckleduster, 4Ground, even old Flying Tricycle stuff). I think Heisler had some comparisons on his blog.

I have a comparison post on my blog with many of the different brands shown side by side: http://wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2013/08/28mm-laser-cut-western-buildings-side.html

if you are every looking for inexpensive small building to flesh out the town without busting the budget  try these they are not horrible you can get 6 for the price of one 4ground (but they are definitely not the same quality)

Have you used the Plast craft Bandit?  Do roofs come off or solid piece?
Thanks,
Frank

They are a plastic foam core PVC building that come in pre cut sheets.  So the buildings are hollow.  The windows and doors are plastic and the walls have no detail. You can paint on wood texture or as I did scribe it in (very easy to to) But as stated they are not as detail as the more expensive stuff but if you want some small buildings to add on these are really good.  And the roofs can lift off or be glued down

Bandit - can you explain 'scribing' it in for me?  Never heard of the term.  How is it done?  Do you have photos?

Thank you

Foam PVC is a bit like Styrene Sheet, but softer, it means you can draw into it with a pencil, biro to make marks, embossing pattens.  Its not as soft as the PVC foam core material

Comes in 1, 2 +mm thick and super glues really well.

Here is a rough description of scribing along with a few pictures. A razor saw is a fine toothed hobby saw, anything that has small sharp teeth could be used.

Those about said it all I just used a blunt sculpting tool and lightly press the detail into the foam leaving a wood like texture (it's very easy) and for $4 you can't really do any harm :)
