Perry Mahdist for crusades era Arabs?
« on: 14 February 2016, 08:07:35 PM »
Hey all, i was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Perry Mahdists (both plastic and metal) and whether they could easily work as Muslim armies during the Crusades.
(I really don't care much for the Gripping Beast Arabs and am looking for an easy to bulk up my forces.)

I have used some of the bareheaded guys with different shields for tribal levies, but only made a unit out of them. You will have to be abit more imaginative to bulk out larger forces.

Don't do what I did and buy the HaT 28mm figures, they're utter shite. I bought a box to bulk out opposition for Tangier. Fortunately they were bought for a fiver at a bring and buy, which is why I bought them in the first place.

Cheers for the replies.
I've seen a few of the HaT models and can't imagine buying any.
I'll probably grab a box of the Perry Mahdist and, if I can't make them all work as crusades era then at least I can do them up as Sudanese rebellion era.

It's still a great buy either way as it has tons of bits you can use and depending how good you are with putty you could potentially use all the bodies for crusades era figures.

I'm of the opinion that you might get away with it with some of the Baggara Horse (obviously not the mini's with firearms!  lol ) but I'm inclined to say that no matter which mini's you choose from the Perry Sudan range you will have a fair bit of putty work to do to make them have the first Crusade look.

Just my tuppence  :)

Few of the enemies of the crusaders were Arabs after the Fatimids had fallen.

I bought a load of the Hat cavalry and replaced the tiny heads with spare gripping beast arabs - really cheap and effective way of creating lots of cavalry...the horses and bodies are almost perfect matches for the gripping beast ones...

I'm not so sure..... Egypt was a great source of manpower. Would the house of Ayyub easily give up such a pool of men? I'm referring to rank and file types, essential in sieges etc, not solely to Mamluks.

I think he means Egyptians (and the majority of people in North Africa) are not 'Arabs' strictly speaking... likewise in the Levant. 'Arabized' perhaps, but not Arabs.

Indeed, I have!
I tend to think them a bit too bulky but I feel like I might end up with a few packs, anyway.

I used some for my Arabs.

It works but they would be better when mixed with other miniatures in a unit in my opinion.

Are the hat horses 28mm or 1/72 scale?
Thanks
