Project pennypincher: Cheap Warbands for Skulldred
« on: 15 February 2016, 03:47:02 AM »
Hi folks,  been too long since I posted here!  I have been living through 'interesting times', but I am slowly getting back on my feet.

So since I have been seperated from my beloved mini collection, I have had to start from scratch.  I am on a tight budget, and have decided to use Reaper Bones, Dollar Store monsters and any bargain bin stuff to build a fun set of Skulldred playtest warbands.  I don't have a lamp, I have a small box of paints and no optivisor, so I am just aiming for a fun tabletop paint standard.

First up is the work in progress of my Nethermaul dragon, a dear friend gifted to me:

Here is an early shot of the warbands in various states of incomplete:

And a closer shot:

And since I am poor, some dollar store models:

Filled, but may need a little more converting :)

If this is the result of working with a small box of paints... My goodness... You are very talented!

Fantastic, even with the limitations you are suggesting your work is excellent.

Please post more as you progress, its always good to see what someone can do, especially when the work is this good.

Good grief, that's pennypinching? What would you do on an expansive budget?!  8) 8) 8)

Dragon is grand, but all the others are rather nice too.
What are the two pinkish beasts seen to the left, front of the seconf pic but apparently not in the close-ups please?
The dollar store monsters are grand - the Triceratops is good for a chep model; but I'm very much taken with the new appearance of the other once-cartoonish beastie. Are those actually three eyes? I think it's going to be a very interesting lumbering thing.  8) 8)

Awesome stuff! Glad to see your back on your feet and painting again. I always look forward to new posts on your blog. I would love to see you do some basing and terrain tutorials. I've tried in the past to get a similar dark fantasy look but always fail.

Thanks all.  The pink things are Reaper Bones Tiiks, Tiik Barons, Cythons and a sea lion.

More work in progress- speed paint for the dinosaur:

And progress on the dino riders toy...

Great job, your dino. Looks like a 20+ US$ model instead of a cheap toy  :).
Love the Reaper Dragon too, great, subdued colouring.

That dragon looks great! And you really managed to get the dinosaur too look like something much more expensive. I always read your blog but it's nice seeing you post here again  :)
