Jamestown 1607-1610: teaser wip
« on: 27 February 2016, 02:59:20 PM »
A teaser!

As I'm already making a mess assembling for other projects, might as well assemble for a new project too!  ;)  :D

Jamestown 1607-1610 for English Adenturers versus Native Americans.

The English will be mostly conversions of variously armoured pikemen from the Perry ECW range, using parts from the Warlord ECW plastic sprue plus a few swords and bucklers from Perry WotR and HYW plastics.

The Americans will be a mix of bare-chested bowmen and musketmen converted to bowmen from Perry, Warlord (Conquest) and CP Models. For consistency, the CPM are getting headswaps from the Perrys' that are in shirts. Extra bows are from Perry WotR plastics.

Edit: The ECW are on the small side, as as far as I can tell they averaged about 5'6" versus 6' for the Americans.

Tidying up and quite a bit of GS to follow: eg, powder flasks and apostles for the English, metal axes to stone clubs for the Americans.

I'll be using my temperate GOT terrain (which is actually triple duty, as it will also be 18thc Bodmin Moor), swapping out the stone structures for tiles of trees (and maybe a small stockade).

Looks like you are off to a good start.
Do you have the book, Soldiers of the Virginia Colony
1607-1699.
Lots of good info about the time period.

Thanks chaps  :D

It's intended to be more of a small-scale cinematic portrayal rather than a truly historical account, so I'll admit to an absence of reference books though I have trawled the National Parks and other 'official' websites and last night I watched the 3 hour version of Malik's The New World.  ;)

As I'm really focussed on the first group of English, I'm conscious that they were moreso adventurers than soldiers or farmers so I'm aiming for more of an amateur, somewhat uncoordinated look.

Actually, the movie was quite useful as I seem to have used the wrong type of hat (they need a narrow brim and more conical crown) so alterations are in hand.

No special board: I'll be using the GoT one:

But smaller at 3x3 or 4x3 and replacing some tiles with tree stands. Not 100% correct I know but I think close enough for what is secondary use of this terrain.

Bay tiles and a ship for GoT are planned so until then it'll be set inland a bit.  ;)

It's not that impressive, honest.

The figures are a long way from being finished - lots of yucky mould lines are evident! - it just makes sense to do the plastic and metal mash-ups for these the same time as I work on GoT minis as I'm harvesting from some of the same sprues.

Incidentally, I dropped the Cherokee-American War in favour of this one, so not as many projects as you might think.  ;)

That is a great start and a very different setting than most of the Indian Wars. Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

 lol lol

Yep.
The machine that is Silent Invader needs to be kept busy and out of trouble otherwise the World Domination Plan may come into effect and we would ALL be in trouble.
 :D

Incidentally: Have you seen these chaps, Steve?

They may not be exactly what you are looking for, but may provide inspiration nonetheless.

Thanks chaps!

Yes, I REALLY DO need another project  ;D. And yes they do keep me out of trouble.   :o

Basically, I can only get in as many of the games I want to play if I play solo, and exploring different genres is partly about finding the 'perfect' solo mechanic. I've got various different systems in hand though my current favourite is one I'm working on to replace the X-Wing rules that uses Ability, Agility, Defence & Armour stats for character (spaceship or human!) types alongside a JavaScript engine that 'decides' which of my forces the enemy will attack. It's suited to melee games (like space dogfights or murderous brawls).

And thanks Paul for the link. Yeah I very nearly bought those but stopped myself as I'd use only 10 of the 15 minis (I'm avoiding chest armour and cloaks) though the other 5 would provide spares for wespon swaps. With airmail they'd be $74, which would make the 10 just over £5 each. It has to be said that I've cut up enough Hasslefree minis at that sort of price so the cost isn't at all a showstopper but I'll probably go for them later in the project (I'm thinking around about Fathers Day  ;) :D) as if makes sense to work through the less expensive minis first.

Looks like a great start. When you get bored with it, you can throw in a few tentacled beasties and find out what really happened at Roanoke.  lol

lol I'd probably have to move this to the Strange Aeons board  ;)

Have been progressing the minis.

45 minis have had there basic conversions done with another 12 or so minis awaited.

I've yet to start on the GS work but have done quite a lot of cutting and shutting.

Some examples of the Americans:

I think the two to the left were Perrys with muskets, that have had the firearms and powder horns drilled/carved out and turned into bowmen using parts from their WotR sprue. The central Conquest mini has similarly had musket swapped for bow, the two to the right are CP Models Skraelings who have had their 'Inuit' heads swapped out for ones from the surplus (clothed) Perry & Conquest woodland indians. They'll all be getting moccasins and leggings.

And a similar example with the English:

As mentioned previously I've used minis from the Perry ECW range, taking advantage of the various pike poses to get variations of the different troop types I'll be using. Most of the plastic bits are from Warlord Games ECW infantry sprues plus some WotR pieces. The troop types are the melee guys with swords and pistols, musketeers, some boarding pikes to protect the musketeers, and some harquebusers (wheel-locks). In addition to the Morions, there are also minis in the 'cow-pat' cloth hats.

I really like the conversions on these so far.
 8) 8)

I think you know that I like your conversion work, though, seeing as I have your 'Aliens' stuff, which are very impressive.
 :D

Keep it up, mate.
