Martin only cites a 'battle axe' in the books. Black on white would seem the most appropriate if you want to keep the heraldry simple and in keeping with a Stark affiliation, but the silver axe head on a black staff on grey as depicted in the series looks equally good and technically grey is a field colour for Starks as well.
The axe doesn't have to be double headed though.... you could quite legitimately make the axe on the banner the same as one carried by your Cerwyn leader, though I admit a double header seems more ferocious and heroic. There's no 'back story' I can see in the books of a treasured Valyrian heirloom being employed which might advocate the use of a more archaic looking axe type...
You could invent your own heraldic background and make the most senior member of the household have a double headed axe emblem, while everyone else, sons and household troops have a single headed axe...?
Warriors dreams, summer grasses, all that remains

I'm looking for something a bit 'meaner' mastiff type dogs....

Have you looked at these, former Vendel mastiffs from Sgt. Major? http://www.sgmm.biz/Animals_c_83.html

Hello!

This is not dead! On the contrary, it's about to get interesting :-) The new modeling tools and replenishment of green stuff arrived as did my boxes of European Mercenaries and Light Cavalry :-) So this evening I'll start the most joyous of tasks, unboxing :-)

More to follow!

Cheers

So, the goodies were unwrapped!

I was unashamedly excited to receive the models, I felt like a kid again, it was amazing hahaaaaaa!!!!!

As I am basing the project around House Cerwyn, I will aim for a winterized look, so my first task was to clip and glue together 2 models and begin sculpting fur  :D

First up will be a minor Noble, I intend for him to be carrying a banner and he'll most likely be the only fully armoured figure in the unit.....

I wanted a large, perhaps bearskin cloak which he is clutching in his free hand, to be falling down his back to the floor, it gets cold up North!

Second is a rank and file, again, to fit in with the cold theme I have modeled fur trims to his tunic and boots and will add a cloak too. I also sculpted on a beard as the original head looked to 'clean'  ;)

So, all in all an eventful and immensely fun evening of this wonderful hobby!

Stay tuned for more  :)

Very good start !!! The green stuff work is very nice indeed!! The addition of the fur trim to the legs and arms is a nice idea! Will try that on a figure or two,too .

Great stuff! You are off and running! :)

Thanks Richard! I had been looking at your old threads for the Perry WotR models and then your own Westeros ones and had been meaning to start up my own Perry force, finally got around to it!!!

How do you remove the mould lines on the models? Filing, or with liquid green or do you brush on plastic glue to smoothen out the lines?

Cheers!

vielen dank  :)

It's actually quite straight forward to do, have you ever tried?

Cheers

Yes I did use GS before but haven't thought about cuffs of fur.
The Captain uses liquid cement to get rid of smaller mould lines When I am informed correctly, alas it is what I do , works a treat!

Yep. Just brush them away with glue (scraping off any really obvious ones first witlh a craft knife). But any residual lines or mould lines running over delicate areas of moulding, like faces or fingers, are best 'painted away' with liquid polystyrene cement  :)
