Very Tiny Little Soldiers
« on: March 06, 2016, 04:26:48 PM »
I've been tossing my Frosgrave rulebook around for a while now, keeping somewhat up to date on the game and all that, but I haven't really let myself get on with it yet. I've found that there are a few drawbacks (for me) with using 28mm models: time to paint, and storage. Frostgrave causes less of an issue with the latter than something like Warhammer, but it manages to still be a problem. So what I'm moving forward with are 15mm models I've picked up from the Demonworld Classic and Asgard Classic ranges. This also comes with the benefit of being able to have smaller terrain ^_^

15mm doesn't give me the biggest versatility, so I'm having to think up ways to indicate sides for when I have multiple players making use of my models, since I'm the provider of such things in my group. I was wondering if anyone knows of something that could do the trick, like a coloured base that I could slot a 1p into (à la what sodapop has been doing with their new production runs)?
Of course the simple option is to paint a different ring around the bases, but I like the idea of a roster of mercenaries for my group to pull from.

You can get little Wine glass markers at the dollar store that should be able to be put on the base of your models (on a leg or whatever) that would easily signify different teams or you could just use colored yarn or thred as "belts" to mark them.

Try an MDF sabot base - the type of stuff you get from Warbases.
They usually come with multiple spaces to use as movement trays for Dux Brit etc, but if you send Martin an email and explain that you want 1p slot trays with only one slot he'll probably give you a quote.
Then just paint a coloured ring around the bases, but swap the figures over between games.
If you are the provider of the figures, get the quote from Martin and get your players to pay for the bases - it will be cheaper for them than providing figures.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Loombands! the cheap little elastic bands you get in packs on 100 from the pound shop, they sit over the mini and you can have a different colour for each team.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

Nice models. Painting the base rims in different colors or repeating the same color on all models of a warband might help.

With the specification that you don't want to use faction colors on the actual miniature or base, I think that the simplest thing would be to paint a bunch of metal washers in designated faction colors (Thaumaturge = white, Necromancer = black, Elementalist = red, etc.), and sticky-tack them to the bottom of your bases.  Maybe use washers that are slightly larger than the bases so that there will be a colored halo around the base from a bird's eye view.

Very good idea.

OR if your bases are washers, get some magnet tape/paper and cut out a square, place it on the metal washer, cut around the washer (smooth if need be) the paint edge of magnet?  Don't know if this would work, just thought of it.

Ah! Yes, sabot bases are think kind of thing that I was thinking of (I didn't know what they were called). Though, I also like the washers or cutting up a magnet sheet. Thanks for some direction here.  :)
And thank you for the comments on the models  ;)

So these were exactly the sort of thing I was after, thank you fastolfrus for directing me to warbases!
It could be argued that the base size is now a bit big for 15mm, but I think it represents a fair space for "fighting room".
Also toying with some fish tank ornaments for terrain.

Frostgrave in 15mm using Demonworld figures and as many aquarium ornaments as I can find for me too.

Ral Partha Europe's  Blighthaven range means that you can pick up a 10 figure warband for £5.  There are more than enough Wizards and apprentices in the range, or at least figures that could be used as such.  Including the characters, and across the ranges well over 20 wizard type figures to be had.  The Thain range of northerners fit very well into Frostgrave theme.  Most monsters in the Bestiary are  covered by the Demonworld range, although I haven't found a 15mm ice toad yet.

I have a cp models toadling which works for a large fantasy toad in 18mm, i.e. Demonworld/copplestone miniatures said to be 15mm.

How big are ice toad expected to be?

That is a good find DivisMal.  Best 15/18mm ice toad I've seen so far.  I'll get one.
