The French Army in Egypt 1798-1801

Although not Napoleonic as such, I’ve included this range under the ‘Napoleonic banner’. The idea with this range is to start at the end and then maybe go backwards, we’ll see. The main aim for the first releases is to cover the Kleber ordnance which came into use in 1799. These were multi-coloured woolen uniforms made in Egypt from what resources they had. This is the uniform that they fought the British in 1801. These can also be painted for the Syrian campaign of 1799 where they wore a blue linen version of the same cut.

I’d like to thank Hans-Karl Weiss for his generous help on details and Yves Martin on his timely help on the uniform colours. The colours shown on the painted examples are down to Yves amazing research that uncovered (literally, in the French archives) swatches of cloth from the Army of Egypt that had not seen the light of day for 200 years.

Great, I understand why Perry main effort lays in 1815 but I would really like to see some Early period - pre Napoleonic Wars - both France and enemies in Revolutionary wars.

Yes, but it's a long way to go before this is a viable army.  Sadly, the Perrys do tend to butterfly ranges......

Not really : the current release pretty much covers the infantry. All Alan Perry needs to add now are hussars, chasseurs à cheval and dragoons for the cavalry, some artillery and mounted command, and you have all the basic troop types for a French army. The régiment des dromadaires can be added later and the range can be supplemented by the Brigade Games figures sculpted  by Paul Hicks, which should be very compatible with the Perry releases size-wise.

A great period and a great range. And as Arthur rightly says, they will fit well with the Brigade Games figs.

Now for French Cav, you can use the Perry's plastic Hussars for Hussars (you will need to convert a trumpeter fig) as well as Chasseurs. For French Dragoons there is currently only the BG figs, which are very expensive...but they do dismounted ones, which is nice.

For French Artillery, I am not impressed with the BG ones...and they are darn expensive...so let's hope Alan gets around to this one.

For the opposition, Paul Hicks Ottomans are outstanding figs, but as said, very pricey from BG....especially as you need loads of the buggers!

Alan has already made a start of the British usable for this period and let's hope he covers all the strange ones!

So there you have it, a good excuse to hit the early Nap wars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
