Zurlauben Infantry Regiment - Spanish Succession
« on: 31 March 2016, 07:55:11 AM »
Something I did on a whim a few months ago. There was something about the flags that intrigued me and front rank make great miniatures. Flags by Flagsofwar.

Something I would change is to make the finials a bit more dynamic, as if the wind is 'playing' with them.

Thanks guys!

I still have enough models for another unit, but ancients are keeping me busy.

Was tempted to do a full army using wargames factory minis for the reason I like plastic's flexibility, but with the way warlords changed the sprue there wasn't much variety left.

Where are you located, Corso? One way to enjoy this period with the size and expense of 28mm figures is to be part of a group that divides up brigades to be painted for a big battle. That way you don't have to do big armies all by yourself.

Like your basing. Are those square bases 40mm or 1.5 inches on a side?

Funnily enough, I was googling to find information out about Zurlauben, because I have a partial unit to complete. This turns out to be the very unit shown above in this post!  Presumably I bought it here, or on eBay.

I'll get the extra figures I need painted up (to make it up to 19 minis). What I am curious about in the grenadiers in bearskins- does anyone know whether there is any evidence for the bearskins? I suspect that there will turn out to be relatively little known about the regiment's uniforms.

Bigredbat, that's quite a journey the minis made! I had stopped the project many years ago and the unit had been sold off. Maybe the guy who got them resold the unit on ebay to you.

It was one of those projects when you get hyped about it, get some stuff without a thought, then you realise that in your area nobody is interested in wargaming the period in question (and quite understandably because you need bucketloads of minis to do a massed battle - it's a huge investment in time and money and thus I can emphatise with someone who declines to go for a specific project). So the only option would be to do 2 armies myself and share one army with a gaming buddy for a wargame. Too ambitious to achieve, especially with someone like myself who is an unrepentant hobby butterfly.

I had painted them with citadel paints (so if you require the paint recipes to apply to additional minis for the unit let me know). Don't know about the bearskins because I didn't delve much in the period.

Hi Corso, I was pleased to get them, whatever route it was by! Thanks for the tip with the Citadel paints, I use those a lot and I'll be able to match nicely. I think i'll use the grenadiers for a different unit.  I hope to get the unit finished in the next few weeks.

I'm extending the old Zurlauben unit into a battalion of 19, and replacing the bearskin grenadiers with tricornes. I still need to do the faces and detailing. Hope to have them based next week. The old colonels flag had come partially unglued, so I steamed it apart and reglued it, adding some billows.
