Nobiscum Deus
« on: 11 April 2016, 12:59:42 PM »
I have started a Byzantine army intially for Saga but it will likely grow into something larger for Hail Caesar possibly.

Just done the first unit (of archers) using Gripping Beast figures. See picture below.

Thought I would start this thread to keep myself motivated to keep going with project. Hopefully the pictures will improve.

The mounted figure in the picture is an officer forming part of a cavalry unit converted from some painted mounted thegns. Actually a GW Rohan Royal Guard figure. I have just Byzantined him a bit, colour scheme-wise, but the main painting was done by the excellent Olicana Painting Services. Pictures to appear shortly of these units.

Bit of and update with some slightly better pictures.

I can't take much credit for the cavalry. They were professionally painted by Olicana painting services. I just re-did the shields, tunics and leggings and re-based them to look Byzantine.

Those Late Eastern Romans (al right Byzantines) must be the most beautiful army ever to exist.
Superb job you did here!

Can't understand why these chaps aren't more popular. They look stunning. :)

Thanks for the comment. When I have done a few more Byzantines I have some Arabs to oppose them. As with the Byzantines another colourful army with a broad composition of troop types. Both armies are well matched which makes it a good period to game. I guess the Crusades have more prominence so people opt for them rather than the Byzantines?

I think a lot of people miss when thinking about putting together an army for the crusades-era.
