Looking for feedback on Weird WWII rules/stats
« on: January 02, 2009, 04:38:59 AM »
One of the things that I have been kicking around for some time is coming out with a generic set of Weird WWII rules that incorporated minis from various manufacturers.

I am sure that I am not alone in loving all sorts of figs and wanting to be able to use them all in games.

Earlier in the year I tried a few different game designs and scrapped them both and before I head out to try attempt #3 I thought that perhaps it might be interesting to get some feedback from other Weird WWII gamers regarding their own preferences.

The options are

1) Create a new distinct ruleset
2) Create stat and army/faction lists for  Battleground Evolution: World at War or Disposable Heroes or Rules of Engagement, all three or some other ruleset
3) Something else?

So what would  people prefer to see?

Best thing to do is grab on to a WWII set of rules that you really like and just do some mods for it.  This will allow you to get the full WWII side of the genera and then just inject whatever level of weirdness you want.  This will also allow others who are into that system to game weird without any further investment in rules but now can concentrate of getting their weird war minis for all the great lines out there.

I am a big fan of the battleground weird war rules.

The problem is getting ahold of the core rules. Besides, Brian already does a great job of putting out stats for that system :-)

Which is ultimately what may end up happening but since I don't have an real preferences on my own at them moment (most rules have things I like and don't like) I thought I'd see what the general consensus was.

I've become a big fan of the AE-WWII rules. Their universe is pretty specific, but you can obviously plug and play your own stuff, and it should hold up well. And as a bonus, no points costs to figure out. Give them a go.

I am a huge fan of the game but as you mention the universe is very specific and while I have tinkered with some new factions for the game I am not sure that they would be happy with someone producing commercial variant rules based on their product.

The game also has little to no stats for vehicles and I was hoping to work within a system that had pre-existing stats for vehicles, support guns etc.

And sadly I can't change the poll.

I guess Matt is just going to have to change the name of the game ;-)

I agree brian does a great job on the rules, and they are easy to mod to suit your games as to finding the rules every once in awhile they come up on ebay.

I like BF:Evo, RoE is good too and we use Nuts!, LOTOW and Amazing War Stories too.

There are so many good rule sets out their that you can't cover all of them in one book.

All the rules you suggested seem popular, why not just cover the things you're going to use?

You should also be very careful for what system you can write a supplement legally.
While it is possible for Bf: Evo under the Logo License, I am not so sure what happens if you want to sell rules for any other game system...

I'll be contacting people beforehand and discussing it if that is what I decide to do.

My 2 cents:

I really enjoy Iron Ivan's DH/C7B, and I'm starting to upgrade it with some weirdness bonanza. The thing is working really well by now with walkers, as the armour penetration system is so concrete you can just decide armor thickness and weapon's caliber/lenght and your rules are ready.
If you want to test something with DH/C7B I'll raise my hand as tester (as we're already doing it!).
