Highlanders in Zululand
« on: April 24, 2016, 12:03:22 AM »

Hi. Can anyone tell me whether the Highlanders in the Zulu war wore kilts, trews or a mixture ?

TIA, Pete

There were certainly kilts in the first Boer war; one unit was crippled by sunburn on the backs of its fair-skinned Celtic knees.

I looked into this a good while back. Only one tartan wearing scots regiment served in the Zulu war and they wore trews -  The 91st Foot, Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders.

The other Scottish units wore uniform the same as the rest of the army (i.e. Dark blue) or in one case served as mounted infantry.

There is a plate in the Osprey on the Zulu War and you should be able to google up a pic. The tartan is a dark green with a lighter green square.

Scottish Regiments in the Zulu War -  Royal Scots Fusiliers, 90th Perthshire Light Infantry and 91st Argyllshire Highlanders. The Edinburgh-raised 99th Lanarkshire Regiment and the 94th Regiment, raised in Glasgow, also served against the Zulus but were shortly afterwards stripped of their Scottish associations to become battalions of the Wiltshire Regiment and the Connaught Rangers.

91st appear to have worm trews. if the Royal Scots Fusiliers also wore tartan then they would be in trews as well but U think they wore Oxford Mix (see below)

91st
