Early War Fallschirmjager...Parts 1, 2 & now 3
« on: April 27, 2016, 11:57:11 AM »
Here's some pictures from a commission I have been working on recently. They are 28mm Wargames Foundry Fallschirmjager, the pictures in today's post are several sets of WW2022 from this range. Hopefully I will be able to feature some of the other sets over the next few days.

Looking good! I still like those Foundry paras. One slight point, the helmets during the early war were Luftwaffe Field Blue, unless they had a cover or painted over with camo. They also had insignia on them that people like Company B and Warlord produce. Just a suggestion.

I don't believe that helmets looked Field Blue in combat conditions, even in the earliest operations such as Eben Emael. The FJ took pains to cover up the insignia, which just presented a nice target for snipers:

It's also worth scrolling down the following page which shows an example of the helmet & describes the appropriate colour:

The FJ I have painted are to go up against British troops in "what if" Operation Sealion scenarios.

I like this famous picture. Even though its a propaganda piece it tells us a lot about the quality of these men.
Too bad they fought for the wrong course !

Those are seriously good paint jobs! Could you share your smock colour?

Thanks!  :)
Smock colours used:
Base - 50/50 Vallejo 888 Olive Grey & Lifecolor UA 403 Field Grey 2
Wash - Secret Weapon Green Black Wash
Then back over with Base mix
Highlight - Straight Lifecolor Field Grey 2

A decent alternative colour you could try is Reaper Pale Lichen.

I hope that helps  :)

Thanks, that's helpful! I'm hoping to paint some for Crete this year.  I like the way you've got some contrasting colours in there.  I'm sorry to see that blue helmets are out, I remember painting my Airfix 1:32 models with blue helmets and trousers about 35 years ago!  Did they ever have blue-ish trousers, do you know?

Great painting, on some very dynamic looking figures.

Me too. I was planning on some early war paras (in 10mm) and would have gone with blue helmets and trousers :-(

Lovely figures and great painting :)

I would be tempted to paint the blue when I do mine, just because it looks cool - I think yours are more accurate though!

Yeah, go on  :) The "rule of cool" an all that, they're your troops after all.

More Wargames Foundry Fallschirmjagers, this time set WW2021 German Paratroop Command:

I apologise if there are any inaccuracies with the way I have painted them, I can't change them now as they have been posted back to the bloke I painted them for.
