Lyle had maybe two scenes, and left for Egypt, before being replaced with 1890s Kate Beckinsale from Underworld.  I had thought that it was going in the Mummy direction, but apparently not.

Penny Dreadful has come sadly but intensely to a finale.

Watched the last episode yesterday. What an emotional end. Still impressed by the final scene, especially by the Wordsworth's ode.

It hurts to see the series go but for some reason I can understand John Logan, it's a good moment to end it before it becomes one of these boring never-ending stories out there.

I don't believe that Jon Logan was being honest.  At least on IMDb, people found reference of him talking about season 4 ideas, etc.  From the events of season 3, it seems to me that he found out that the season was cancelled half-way through shooting the season, since there seemed to be a shift midway.

Things were plodding along, and then Ethan et al. suddenly return to England and everything seems rushed.  New characters were introduced for no seemingly good reason (Hyde, Kaeteny, Catarina, Sewell).  There are also many loose ends.  Dracula escaped.  Ethan never learned about Brona and Victor.  Brona's revolution simply peters out.  Vanessa suddenly gives in to Dracula, but immediately surrenders to Ethan.  The fact that Ethan was a werewolf didn't seem that important considering he was supposed to be the "Wolf of God."  Dr. Jekyll simply becomes Lord Hyde when his father dies.  The Egyptian elements seemingly just disappeared.  The surviving witch and her seduction of Ethan to evil just evaporated.  And so on.

To me, it's like Rome all over again.  They learn that the show is ending so they scamble to end it on their terms as best as possible.

It was a shame that the last series was so obviously throwing everything in the pantry together into the pot. Still full of marvelous visuals, but narrative coughed a few times and died.

Me neither, although keen to view it now as I see Dracula is involved. (Well he had to be didn't he?!) :)

Amazon on dvd boxed set. I believe season three is due out in October. If you have Sky I think you can download the whole lot.
