I made a dark ages village!
« on: June 04, 2016, 10:56:16 PM »
Made from balsa wood for the frame and walls, with teddy-bear fur roofs.

The bases aren't finished, since I ran out of tufts and flowers and what-not, and they need some extra detail like spears leant against door frames, shields hung on walls, stacked firewood, etc, but they're finished enough to see some action on the table top. I used them in three games of SAGA on the weekend, with my Vikings being victorious twice, but then get trounced in the third game by the Irish!

The large feasting/mead hall needs to have some timber 'scaffolding' placed over it to add some detail and hide some flaws in the roof.

The paints were all cheap acrylic craft paints, with the timber being a dark burnt umber brown with light grey drybrushed over it, and the roofs being a caramel brown colour basecoat drybrushed with a mixture of yellowy off-white colour and grey, followed by a drybrush of the same off-white colour mixed with white.

I put the paint recipe on here largely because if I don't write it down then I'll never be able to replicate it.

Nice work on those. Make sure you put up some more pics when you have done those little extra bits.

I'm liking them too. I bought some skinny coffee stirrers from the $2 shop for exactly the same type of project a few weeks ago. Now I have the inspiration I need.

Those look really nice, I'm not sure an imperfection in a dark ages thatch roof is a bad thing....

Thankyou for the kind words! I shall definitely post up pictures of the completed buildings, and hopefully a couple more as well. Does anyone have some suggestions for other dark ages type buildings I could include? I've already got a nice stone church, maybe a smithy or tavern or stables/barn? Some fields and wattle fencing? Something that makes the village look like a high-value target, a tempting target for raiding warriors :)

A couple of livestock pens containing some hogs and cattle surrounded by wattle fencing and some crop fields.  That should make it too tempting for a raid.

Everything starts with a village to be raided and plundered!  ;)
