Anyone used Victrix's Legionaries as Caesarians?
« on: 06 June 2016, 09:45:57 AM »
Hi, everyone. I just received a box of Victrix's chainmail armoured legionnaires and was thinking of using them as Caesar's legions on Gaul and maybe Britannia. The thing is they are supposed to portray pre-Marian troops, and I'm not sure how to make them look as Caesar's troops. Looking at Foundry's romans, I thought of lopping the feathers off the helmets and calling it a day, maybe even sculpting a couple of horsehair plumes. I also thought of not using any of the spears, since it's more or less the triarii weapon of choice, and arming them all with pila. I took a gander at a couple of Osprey books on the subject, but I'm still not sure on how to go on. If anyone with more knowledge on the subject than me could lend me a hand, I'd be ever so grateful. Thanks in advance, and as soon as I have some ready and painted, I'll post them here.

Just remove (or cut down) the plumes. I suppose if you want you could model the floppy horse-hair crest of Caesar's chaps.
I'm doing the same trick the other way round. I have Wargames Factory Caesar-era legionaries, which are also being used as Republicans.

i have thought of it. The only problemis is the greave. Caesarians didn't have these, but I could probably live with the compromise. Obviously, after you cut down the plume you can still you thenm as ealier legionnaires.

Yep, for what I've seen, the greave should not be there if they wer caesarians. But well, it's a "minor" thing. Another thing that comes to mind: There's certain helmets I should avoid, right? The etrusco-corinthian ones, maybe?

I think the greaves aren't too much of a problem as the way the shields are held, they won't be seen at a distance. I remember from my foundry Romans, that a lot of the poses didn't have the helmet horse plumes. It is interesting that the Warlord Romans have the centurions wearing the etruso-corthinian while the rank and file wear the montefortino.

It's legionaries, not legionnaires.

You could use the victrix legionnaires and use the leg/s of the velites in the same box. Some conversion work would be needed, but Victrix legionnaries are highly detailed, so worth it.
